Quick Q folks
When I fill up and undo the fuel cap there is an almighty woosh of pertol infused gas rushing out to meet me. Is this normal ? shouldnt the tank be vented in some way. My other cars dont do this.
I presume its petrol evaporating in the tank?

Never had that on mine.
As you say, the tank is vented so why should there be a pressure build up?

I've never experienced this on any of mine. Craig will be along soon he had a bit of a saga with his but I think it was a vacuum instead of it pressurising.

I suspect that it may be air rushing into the tank rather than out of it. At the end of every run in the car, undo the filler cap and check whether the condition continues. If it does, there may be a blockage in part of the evaporative system and it should be investigated further. I have just experienced the same on another marque, other examples of which have suffered sufficient vacuum to implode the plastic fuel tank.

I also had that on the Series 2. Breather was blocked.

With modern cars, they arent allowed to vent fuel vapour into the air for enviromentalist reasons. Could just be a vacuum created as fuel is used up?

The vent should allow air in to prevent a vacuum effect AND seal off if the car overturns to prevent fuel leakage through it. Your symptoms sound like a blockage or sticking of the vent valve.

Cheers folks. I will do another couple of fill ups and see whats what. Im sure its venting out rather than in but will double check on next fill up.

My 4/4 has been doing that since new in 2016, once it breaks completely, I’ll maybe take a look at it . In the meantime, I’ve not experienced any adverse effects like fuel starvation or petrol smells coming into the car, leave it the alone I’d say.
