The owner of this Austin A30 van stopped to chat, he tows his speedway bike on a trailer behind. Being Sunday there were lots of classics on the road we must have a hundred or so mainly 50’s, 60’s and 70’s British and American cars.  And then over Arthur’s Pass back towards the west coast

No prizes for guessing what was parked here last night  The forecast rain had just started as we left this morning, the forecast was for 200 to 300mm of rain, and it just got heavier during the drive. We all arrived soaked to the skin despite waterproof jackets and overalls. Forecast for more of the same tomorrow before returning to the sunshine we have had the last couple of weeks. The rain we had in Grindelwald a couple of years ago was mere drizzle compared with what we had today.

The rain we had in Grindelwald a couple of years ago was mere drizzle compared with what we had today. But at least it hasn't snowed (yet?). Hopefully by the time you see this the rain will have gone and you'll be back to sunshine for the rest of the trip. It all looks absolutely fantastic

Well the rain hammered down all night, we woke to the news that the road we travelled yesterday was closed due to flooding and land slips, and that was the main road down the west coast. In view of the forecast for the day of continuous heavy rain clearing tomorrow we are staying put in Fox Glacier today.
Turns out it was a good call, the road is now closed in both directions out of here at least until tomorrow morning.
