The EU has now agreed to speed limiters etc from 2022. Autocar and others doubt whether the UK (or models for the UK) could diverge much from that. Mandatory speed limiters from 2022

This (see quote), plus when leaving a 70mph motorway and arriving at 40 mph sign on the slip-road, as well as the lack of GPS in tunnels etc is a big issue, and already experienced by some Tesla drivers (and those following behind).
I was on a 70 mph duel carriage way when I went under a bridge on which the speed limit was 40 mph. The speed limiter registered this and banged the brakes on very hard.

Surely the systems are inadequote to manage speed changes, especially with so many non limited cars around. Scenario....... Car with senses lower speed limit so slows the car. Other non limited vehicles have to react. It could be like brake testing! These systems would be ok if every vehicle had them and managed the speed automatically. There are too many variables and situations for me to be convinced they would work effectively.

There is work underway to have different lamps on the windscreen showing when autonomous cars are running in hands off mode. I think they may need one warning cars behind that a speed change is about to occur. The system should be able to predict this from on-board computer bits.
A couple of smaller flashing reds in the rear window warning prior to the deceleration would resolve it. I expect there will also need to be some urban change to avoid errors. Each car can then update the common map of changes, crowdsourcing is the term.
It is going to happen as part of the autonomous driving anyway as no vendor is going to make their car break the speed limit. If they then force it on the manual driving mode it will be tedious to say the least.

Can't say that I see a problem with this proposal. Most of the time we're driving dull family boxes in nose to tail traffic over potholes. Could you speed even if you wanted? And when the box is electric?
For fun driving buy yourself a car from the 90s before electronics. Maybe with a nice big polluting VI. And thrash it.
That's my plan.

I read this as being top end limited, maybe i'm wrong ? It in my experience is not the high speed on 70 mph limit roads that causes RTCs but excess speed on low limit roads.I can see this not ending up well

I agree with you Keith. Better and regular driver education would have a greater effect I feel. Though if our member with the Volvo is anything to go by, this limiter could cause more accidents on higher speed roads. Whatever happens, there is still a long way to go to get this technology to work correctly.

My BMW misses about half the signs🙄. With an override in case of need...ie a hard push down of the throttle.

Articulated lorries overtaking each other on the A34. They are limited to 56mph resulting in the overtake taking roughly that of a whales gestation period. The queue building up behind the lorry then means they cannot get back out again for ages whilst the snake crawls past nose-to-tail at the rate of the slowest driver. Teeth grinding.
