I'm in the process of acquiring a 1994 4/4 and am looking for European Breakdown Cover.(6 week trip planned for summer) Price wise, RAC cover (my usual choice) seems heavy and other providers won't quote due to age (which, I appreciate is why the RAC quote I received was somewhat loaded). Has anyone any recommendations?

If you insure it with Gott and Wynne they provide European breakdown cover for about an extra 20 quid. I used it once in Italy and it worked fine.

I use to have G&W breakdown cover, but I’ve now switched my breakdown cover with Nationwide, it’s about £12 per month but includes worldwide travel insurance and mobile phone cover
UK & European breakdown and recovery assistance. You’re covered in any eligible UK registered vehicle.
If you breakdown and the vehicle you're in can't be repaired at the roadside, they get you to your destination.
What's included
UK and European breakdown assistance for account holder(s) in any vehicle whether a driver or passenger, registered in the UK, that they are travelling in Cover for anyone driving one UK registered vehicle registered to the account holder and which is being used with his/her permission. Where the account is in joint names then up to two vehicles can be covered Assistance provided at home and at the roadside with national recovery and onward travel No call out limit * No excess to pay

I'm insured with Classicline. European breakdown and recovery is included as standard in their policies.

I’m with Gott & Wynn, broke down whilst at Le Mans last year (burst radiator and small fire left the car undriveable). They handled the recovery and repair painlessly.

I have just changed to the Flexplus account. It’s £13 a month, when you look what you get for your money it’s a real bargain. Travel insurance, mobile phone insurance and breakdown cover plus, depending on how much you leave in the account, 3% interest. You also get access to a savings account with 5% interest. I don’t work for Nationwide, or anyone for that matter, I’m certainly not trained to give financial advice but as Craig says it might be of interest to some folk.
