So the light restoration has begun. True to the breed, it has kingpins, the front tyres touch the chassis on full lock, and the fasteners are a bit eclectic, including square nuts, Meccano style.

Most fasteners gave up easily despite some surface rust, but one, with the head buried in the seat upholstery put up a fight. Heat didn't persuade it so I cut a slot in the protruding bolt and managed to get enough of a hold to loosen the nut. All the fasteners are now soaking in vinegar. Some are useable but some will need replacing. I'll probably keep the originals in a bag, just because they're the originals.
I've added four leather pads over the body attachment points.

The chassis is in excellent condition, just needing some touch up in a few places. It appears to be powder coated, and is the simplest of designs. The pedals have three positions for leg length, and like most pedal cars, the cranks are at 180degrees instead of being quartered, which means two dead spots per rotation........

I've blown some Tectyl 506 down inside the hollow sections, lubricated all the moving parts, and wiped the whole thing over with ACF50. I've cleaned the wheels and treated the tyres. Drive is via a split pin on the offside rear wheel. The nearside freewheels. The front offside wheel had a bit of lateral play on the axle which tended to knock the wheeltrim out, so I've added a washer behind the wheel to take up the play.

It's a really enjoyable task, but now it starts to get more intensive. This was the easy part!!

Fascinating thread Dave...you have about 3 years to complete I estimate before your grandson will be able to drive and enjoy your efforts.

How will you feel if it is damaged after all your work I wonder ? !!

Well, the front bumper is heavy duty, I'm going to fit a rear bumper.

If he prangs it, I'll make him watch me repair it while regaling him with amusing anecdotes.

The bumper is a stair tread.
I could never get a rear one to look right.
The chassis is probably painted with black humbrol with Teflon bushes in the wheels and steering.

I used to use RS panel lights as rear lights and indicators. Could never find anything for the bullet style wing top sidelights.
A chrome cover for square drive bonnet lock made a nice filler cap.

It doesn't look like Humbrol Don, it's super smooth, so whatever it is must have been sprayed.

It's certainly an addictive project!

It was a bit tricky finding paint that was non toxic, yours is quite an early one. So maybe he used something different in those days, or it might have been repainted.
You really need two, one for each foot!

Do they still mandate custodial sentences for child cruelty?
