After reading all comments I guess there is no company who can Change the weak return spring with a better one?  On my 1994+8 I took off the seat belt retraction unit, pulled out the belt and put a couple of extra turns on the drum before letting go. This increases the tension on the spring, it's not weak, it's just not wound up enough. It's the same principle as the recoil starter on a petrol lawn mower when you change the cord.

The tonneau is actually the cockpit. The bit of cloth that covers it is the "tonneau cover".

Hi Mac,
I too tried all the origami solutions but for consistent ease of use Peter's solution of 2 extra zips is an elegant solution to the problem, since I had them fitted I use the tonneau all the time, it covers the back shelf when in use and keeps the hood tidy. The only problem is that the headrests need to be removed when deploying the tonneau to close the car. Yes CaptK. I think I'm going to look into having the 2 extra zips fitted I see Allon White & Williams have been mentioned for this job. Do they need to measure the tonneau cover in situ...or can it simply be posted to them? Is it a fairly standard job for all trad tonneau covers? Thanks Mac

Since the sad death of the trimmer at Williams some time ago,not sure if he was replaced. Be interested to hear how you get on and how much it might cost.

On my 2000 4/4 four seater I have always felt that the back seats would benefit from a cover, both for weather protection and some security. The mohair easy-up roof on Merlin is quite bulky and would be very difficult to put under a tonneau cover. I considered that the front windscreen channel of the roof could sit behind the front seats, using the roof as its own tonneau, with some lift-the-dot fasteners at the side.  The front of the roof is supported by a 22mm diameter stainless steel tube mounted on some quick release fittings (chandler supplies: Sea Screw Ltd) screwed to the wheel arch.  The stainless steel bar and fitting can be easily removed and stowed in front of the roof timber stretcher at the back, when not in use.  The female fittings are not too obtrusive and won’t catch the passemger’s arms. I suspect it will help to reduce back draught a bit: I’ll find out on the way to Allon White tomorrow. If anyone wants to replicate it, I can give them the fitting part numbers and supplier. Tim
