Having just had a hiccup with my starter motor, I wonder whether anyone has tried to remove it with engine in situ? It seems awkward to say the least. The upper bolt is accessible enough, but the lower one....

Check your battery before you go down that road. The supplied stock Banner battery is just barely enough to do the right job and in an earlier car it will soon be dying. Seriously.

Thanks, but battery fine.
Symptoms are a rapid knocking sound from the starter, as if its not properly engaging.

That is also a symptom of a low battery. Not enough amps to jam the solenoid onto the flywheel gear.

This may sound elementary, but have you tried a battery pack or jump start? If it fires using either of those, it's the battery.

Thanks for those ideas.
After attempting but failing to remove the starter, i.e. just fiddling around, it started per usual. So I am hoping it was a one off oddity.

Unlikely. The power lead has been known to work loose, maybe you have made a better connection? Battery is still the likely problem, particularly if it is the original Banner one.

that sounds about right. whatever you were doing either made a better connection or a better grounding connection
