I think your thoughts are sound.
Other than that, there's insulation of the hood, wetting the hood (cooling by evaporation), or insulation of the rest of the "cockpit". Lighter colours will make a difference too, of course.
There are probably other solutions too, but those are the first I can think of, and since noone else has responded, I figured I would. All the ideas are more or less passive and can be combined with your own idea.
