All I can say is that living a hundred yards from a Comprehensive School, a large number of kids are noisy, have no regard for passing traffic and throw down large amounts of litter, including torn up schoolwork with their name on it...……

It's been like that for thirty years.

And while I'm complaining...…..a significant number get dropped off by parents and picked up every day, despite a small catchment area.

So I would ask these eco warriors, just how many walk to school every day...………

In fact there's an infant school a mile or two away, on a main thoroughfare, (a B road link to the M18) which at school times is impassable due to the large number of SUV's blocking the road......

As long as it is not made from concrete, a huge contribution to greenhouse gasses.

I don't think most folks on here need to worry overly, but our descendents?

As for all the school kids jumping on the bandwagon and taking strike days off from school, maybe they could start closer to home, by stopping littering, and trashing the local environment? Maybe while they have their days off school they could use there time wisely and pick up all their rubbish (including a lot of plastic)?

Hypocrisy is a wonderful thing!

But they are following the actions of their peers?
Protest, make soundbites.....but no action.
I wonder how many of them also enjoy the modern gadgets like mobile phones, tablets, laptops to excess. Buy/use items shipped around the globe instead of locally produced items?

PS. They say "Express" but I think that is a good example of the fact that despite all expectations the Swiss do actually have a sense of humour laugh

The railway up the valley from Flam in Norway is also a good one. Done it in summer and winter so snowy and green views.

This has evolved into a very interesting Thread. The retreating glaciers are the obvious, but ocean rising not so obvious.
What has fascinated me for many years is when driving through the mountains, the cuts in the hillside made to construct the road display the layers deposited over thousands of year. It obviously took a very long time to do it but what made those layers tilt at radical angles, something sudden? Like the the planet losing it wobble taking a new angle of tilt?
The balance of the planet and large meteor impact or both could make a much bigger mess than oceans rising.

They said on "click" today that 5g takes three times the electricity than the current 4g, so needs additional cooling.

Why do we need 5g? Why the rush towards such non environmental technology?

On the matter of geology, there are examples all over the South West of catastrophic change. The cliffs show layers of twisted volcanic rock covered by sedimentary rock, covered by that sandstone full of broken shale...…..and of course the red Devonian deposits. And the layers of huge rounded stones are said to be from a prehistoric giant river...…………..

Makes ya wonder doesn’t it? How fast did those dramatic examples take?

When Cousteau was diving into the Blue Holes of the Caribbean he found giant stalagmites and stalactites that we’re snapped off the roof and floor of those immense caves, and they all appeared to have broken at the same time.
A large meteor is the current theory and I tend to believe it. Now, that all is under 400 feet of water. If an impact that large could cause such an upheaval it most certainly was global and it probably changed the orbit of earth a bit. It for sure changed the axis a bit also and that would be globally catastrophic and there is zero we could do about it.

I live on an example of dramatic geological change.
Don't bother to read on if you're not interested in geology oldgit

The huge area of the Po Plains was once a bay off the Mediterranean Sea (or at least the Adriatic). The bay has been silted up to form the Plains by a combination of rising an falling sea levels during the ice ages, wave action, rubble and sands washing down from the surrounding mountains and some geological movement.

The most dramatic effect was the formation of the lakes. The base of the lakes, or the bottom of the valleys that the lakes lie in, were once at sea level. The whole area of the pre-alpine lakes then subsided by as much at 1,000 metres, glaciers then filled the lakes with ice up to a level of what would have then been 600 metres above sea level. This effectively protected the lakes from silting up and the summer rains carried the sand and rubble over the top of the ice and out to the then sea beaches. These dunes and deposits of rubble then effectively formed a barrier stopping the sea from re-entering.

At that point the whole zone then started to rise again and to date has risen some 400 metres. The current level of the surface of lakes is at about 200 metres above sea level. Our town is built on the fluvial delta of the local river. Some of the large terraces where villages are built up above our town have been identified as ancient remnants of old fluvial deltas of the same river.

Lake Como is 410 metres (1,358 feet) deep but that is just to the current base at the deepest part. The bottom of the sediment that has washed into the lake is probably another 200 metres further down.

The high Alps in this area are still rising at an incredibly fast geological rate of 1mm per year. Fortunately for us this seems to be a gradual process without any huge seismic disturbances. The 2016 earthquakes in central Italy caused horizontal displacement of as much as 38 cm and vertical displacement of as much as 44 cm.

Geologic lifting can be very dramatic. In Alaska in the early 1960’s there was a 9+ quake that lifted the region 15 feet . We lived in an area that suffered a 7.2 quake that lifted the coastline 6 feet. Ow where we are living there is evidence of 30 foot lifts in geologic past. Probably part of the Cascadia Subductiojn Zone for sure but we live 60 miles away and that would really shake us up.

We have several lakes in the Pacific Northwest , some if not all are glacial to some degree, but the number of bays in the Puget Sound were scoured out by glacial action and are pretty deep. 1200 feet and 700+ feet are not unusual. The little bay we live on is only 60 feet deep yet there is a fault line running parallel to it.

Yep, big shift. But those stalagmites in the cave 400 feet under water were all broken off at an angle of about 20 degrees and then the new ones formed which were also very large and that means they formed before the water was present. Those are a great record of a long ago cataclysm. If a 20 degree tilt took place I wonder what else on the planet was thrown into a different position.
