The environmental cost of battery manufacturing and recycling is pretty high and I personally feel that it is a sham just to sell something else.

Hydrogen has a better future imho.

Long motorway journeys (I do 400 miles per week on motorways) are the killer for electric cars. Even the iPace - which I seriously thought about - will struggle to make 200 miles on a rainy winter motorway at night. The interesting thing about the calculator (https://www.jaguar.co.uk/jaguar-range/i-pace/electric-vehicles/index.html) is that it reminds us all how tires, temperature, rain and wind make a big impact on energy use, whether electric, diesel , petrol of any other source. My Discovery Sport regularly uses more fuel returning South because of the prevailing SW wind etc etc.
I read that we will need 7 new power stations to create the energy needed if all cars are electric by 2040.. and I don't here any talk about that from Westminster.. (Ha!)..

A bizarre statistic I discovered over the winter as I attempted to use the train more: some diesel trains have 8 x the level of Nox pollution IN THE TRAIN than you have in a car.. so, from a selfish point of view, I'll stay healthier in my car! (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-35717927).
It's a complex subject but the usual rules apply: "You can't be Right and Alive at the same time" - so might as well get the transport you fancy!

Auto car got a range of just over 200 miles, some way off Jaguars claims. But then that’s the same for mpg figures provided by all car manufacturers....the real world is always different.

Although I would say that Morgan’s claims for the 4/4 were pretty close!

My 2014 4/4 is the only car I've ever bought which actually achieves the mpg claimed by the manufacturer.

I think this 'statistic' has been debunked. It assumed that all electric cars would plug in to charge at the same time apparently. A bit like every petrol/diesel car turning up at filling stations at the exact same time. Imagine what chaos that would cause!

It certainly has. It makes all sorts of erroneous assumptions, not least that it conveniently forgets the massive amounts of generation capacity required to refine petrol.

It certainly would if they all took several hours to fill up.
How do you stagger electric recharging... there's only 24 hours.....:)

There seems to be a fair amount of solar capacity going in right now too.
e.g. >300Mw in 2018 in the UK per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power_in_the_United_Kingdom

That is without any big Govt incentive. With interest rates low, folks are likely asking if they should invest savings in solar roofing; I'd expect a climate backlash against building huge warehouses without solar roofing as well over the coming months. Heck, I hear even Boris Johnson is jumping on the climate bandwagon!

I walked across Swindon to our village the other day, about 10 miles. My friend took his Kuga in for service and we decided to walk home. The point that hit us, pontificating on electric cars, was the number of flats and small terraced houses we were passing. The density of people was surprising. How will all these folks charge their cars when some small terranced houses and flats have two or three cars and no allocated space in the road.

I expect there’ll be a big cable laid in the road so that cars can be charged as they drive along, like phones do now. Clever idea, think I’ll get it patented. Might even mean push-bikes go faster
