At the moment, it is certainly an issue, but it is being worked on by many companies.

In the UK there are at least two initiatives to my certain knowledge based around the idea of laying charge cables below the roadside gutter in residential areas and then having charging points placed about every 4 metres or so under hatches that can be accessed by the person who parks their car next to it.

Shell are investing heavily in enabling fast charge technologies at their service stations.

Another solution is based around integrating charging points into lamp-posts. When I worked in London I quite often used to walk back from Victoria to Paddington, and in the streets around Hyde Park Place, just south of Sussex Gardens, there were already a few roadside charging points at the edge of the pavement.

In Sweden they are working on a scheme to provide a charging strip down highways, the idea is that a car would lower some contacts onto the strip and get charged as it drives along, a bit like a Scalextric car. Other countries are evaluating different approaches.

The smartphone-based technology for metering, allocating costs, and billing the customers for this have already been developed.

And of course the longer-term expectation is that people will move away from individual car ownership to a buy-time model. Vehicles will be held at larger car storage docks and when you want one you will book one on your smart phone, it will come from the dock to your house and return there when you have finished using it. Tesla already has the technology to do this.

Maybe Shell and other energy companies set to gain from charge points could be persuaded to mend the adjacent potholes in roads at the same time

Thanks M3W55 - that's one of the best articles I have read on the Hydrogen topic. Electric only good for some (shorter journeys), Hydrogen good for others, including Trucks, Ships etc - makes sense. It's a shame our government doesn't see it that way as the economics of hydrogen make no sense at the moment.

It's a great era to be around and see what could be very rapid changes. Can't wait to snooze in my car on my long motorways journeys.. and have the Morgan to zoom around locally!

I don't think there's be much risk, Graham. It's projected to only be on highways, so no need to corner over them. The rails are pretty flush with the tarmac surface, so no bumps. And of course a bike could simply avoid them by going in another lane.
