That's not a failure of the generation and distribution capacity, it's a failure of the capacity market auction system. National Grid is obliged to ensure that it doesn't over-purchase generation, as it would mean that consumers get charged more than they need to. If the market gets it wrong, then there can be short periods of under-generation.

Nearly all power outages to domestic customers are not as a result of generation inadequacy, they are caused by failures in the Distribution Networks.

National Grid are basing their planning on all vehicles being EV by 2040, and they reckon we'll need a 30% in capacity over and above today's generation capability, hardly an insurmountable target, especially given the proliferation os solar capacity.

How does Tim know all this stuff? I think we should just put him in charge of Brexit and everything else and then we can all just relax and let him get on with it.

I am sat in my motorhome in a rainy Knaresborough with a glass of wine so I am somewhat refreshed.

I worked as an independent consultant for the last 12.5 years in the electricity supply industry, my client was a company that also generates 20% of the UK's electricity.

That is not quite true. The government planned to pay for about four coal and gas fired power stations to be on stand by but the EU prevented this move saying it was unfair subsidy. Now a government would not pay for this if every thing was onky dory.

Ah well, that's the rule of law for you - even Governments have to abide by the rules - and before you start, yes, the UK did vote in favour of the legislation when it went through the European Parliament.

The Capacity Market and its associated auctions were set up precisely because the government had to come up with a legal way of ensuring generators were able to compete fairly in a free market to provide the necessary backup generation capacity. The market provides ongoing energy security for the UK so future governments will not have to pay themselves to keep power stations in reserve.

Loads of information here

As long as his motorhome is not over 12 metres.

The average for 30mph speed limit areas is one every 200 yds.

With a terraced being about 5yds wide that's 40 houses per lamp post. The only charge goes to the person that gets there first then.

Providing power sources on residential streets sounds an absolute nightmare and will be hugely disruptive. The whole issue of replacing ICE with EVs is going to be beset with problems, from providing an infrastructure throughout the UK that will successfully replace the ease in which we can refuel at the moment, changing drivers mindsets regarding planning journeys to the impact of providing enough materials to build all the motors, batteries etc.
It’s easy to say that we will end up not owning our cars but will just hire one from a pool when required but that for most of us will be a huge step that won’t be easy to take.
And for those of us living out in the country with poor public transport, not an easy thing to arrange.

I can’t help but think that we are being led astray by the “easy” option of electric vehicles and hydrogen fuelled vehicles would be a better way to go. Or......spend more effort into really cleaning up petrol and diesel emissions at source and go hybrid. Not the longest term solution perhaps.

The next decade or two is going to be very interesting and a huge change in motoring. Let’s hope the Government is up to the challenge!
