Yes, thank goodness that's not the only (or even the most popular) option.

I suspect that private car ownership will become so troublesome and expensive that people living in urban areas simply won't bother.

I wonder if that trend has already started?
Had a quick look and couldn’t find any statistics.

Car sharing is definitely on the increase, according to Deloitte it's been double-digit for a few years and something like 26% growth this year.

With the increase of delivery services people don't need them for shopping, and increasingly people are being disincentivised to take them to work. For the overwhelming majority of people, cars are just an appliance these days.

Perhaps there will be a return to the 1800s when most people lived within walking distance, or at least bicycling distance, of their workplace.

One thing that everyone seems to overlook is that with few exceptions the surface of the roads we drive on is a petroleum product.

Aston University has already being looking into converting household waste into road material.

Basically if there's a problem someone is already looking into making money from it!

... if you assume the same level of car ownership as today. Once you start paying £2K pa for car tax "to pay for the new infrastructure, Mr Voter, as we still need to pay the nurses ... blah blah" then car ownership should decline a little.

And in any case, we all know EV owners charge their cars at work at their employers' expense wink
