Yesterday was great weather, so I decided to drive the M3W to work. It had been bad weather, so I didn't remember how much I had driven or whether I had filled up before parking it.

I started it up and the trip odometer, which I reset on filling up with gas, was in the 90s. The fuel said 0%. The trip I've only seen off by 30 miles at the most, so I'm good for a trip to work and I'll fill up on the way home I think. When I get to work the fuel is in the 7 to 11 percent though.

On the way back home, the trip odometer is in the 50s now, and the gas is up to 14%. So I didn't fill up, and now I get to play the same game again next time I take it out.

I think what I'm going to do is add another dial, this one uses fuzzy logic to tell me to fill up. It'll take into account how long it has been since gas % has been non-zero, and what it jumped to on my last left turn. It'll use the rolling average of the various ranges that my trip odometer jumps around. Finally there will be a switch I can flip off when I no longer remember which gas station I filled up at last. It'll roll all of those numbers into a likelihood that I run out of gas, displayed in units of "soon". It'll be the most accurate gauge on my dash.

Not having my M3W in my hot little hands yet the question comes to mind, can you use a dipstick to check the fuel level?

When I am driving regularly (like now) I fill up when I get to 50ish percent. As you probably are aware, on what kind of slope you park, greatly effects the % that shows up on the gauge.... but at 4-6 gallons I know I am getting nearly all premium on a fill up over the residual regular in the hose

I don't need a fuzzy logic computer, I use my brain eyes: I set the odometer to zero when I fill up and drive 350 to 400 km, no problem.

forget the fuel gauge (or the random number generator as we call it) fill up when trip reaches 180 to 200 miles! i think thats what most of us do

My trip odometer is now up to varying by 40 miles in either direction. It just jumps all over the place. Though I guess I've never seen it go negative.

Thats a bit worrying, the trip meter is one of the few gauges that I actually trust on my M3W. It has always been fairly accurate, not the speedometer though as that has about 6% error. You would think that they would both be out but this doesn't seem to be the case. The mileage info from this is even recorded in the ECU for engine life.

I'd need to spend a bit of time looking at the regular odometer to see if it has the same issue. I thought it might be an LED issue, but based on the numbers I've seen it switch between, like a 5 and a 7, it doesn't appear to be.

I showed the dealer video of it switching, but they didn't have any answers for me.

Get a full tank, fill up anytime your tripmeter says 160-180 miles.
