That was Phil's car (was on here as "Wee Beastie" till I believe he sold his three wheeler). He reckoned that the way the MMC rack curves downwards to the edges was just plain wrong so made his own one. The workmanship on it was superb as you might expect of someone with his own precision engineering and fabrication company. He also had a lovely and much used Vincent Rapide.

The Aussie roll hoops don't have room for the 2018 design luggage rack clamps... hence it seems you have the original design requiring a bolt-on mount. Let us know if you find a way round it!

Not noticed this before... looks like a taperered bolt mount into the headrest and a more enclosing design... anyone used this? Have to say, personally I prefer the less is more look of the original rack, which coped admirably with the 6 fully loaded 30 litre bags we had on our three week New Zealand trip.

How about that idea of a rack with the wings on it, but more narrow so it does not stick out to the sides more than the original? Then the racing mirrors rear view would not be impacted.

You could always 'do it yourself'. This rack was spotted on the recent Shropshire weekend. It's made of 22mm copper plumbing pipe and some plunger heads. Total cost, err, not very much!
