Pete, bad news - but it sounds like you have been in the right hands and hopefully the detachment will resolve OK with minimal effect on your vision. Look upon the "resting" as an investment in future fun time.
As regards Floaters, these are usually just something we all have to put up with as we grow up. But as Pete says, if you notice a sudden change in position or onset of Floaters and or Shadows in your vision, then get checked out soonest. They are often an announcement of a detachment, which if left untreated for too long can lead to a permanent loss of sight in the affected area of the retina.
Regular eye tests are essential for all of us, even if your eyesight is perfect. Keep it that way and keep on driving.

If you get floaters in your eyes or a shadow in your vision....get to hospital pdq. Last night I spent an hour in an operating theatre with a detached retina. No driving 4 to 6 weeks no gig rowing until September. If you get changes in your eyes get them checked
Pete Snap. But in my case the retina was fine and the eye hsopital sent me down to the stroke place who said I had had a small stroke. 4 weeks no driving unless I have another during that time period in which case its hand in the licence until I've been clear for three months. And I have literally just bought myself a new toy car which has had to be stuck in the garage and sorned. Capping it all, today received a £70 penalty notice for accidentally turning into a bus only road in Cardiff rush hour traffic, even after doing an instant U turn to get out of the very badly signposted road.

Hi Pete,
Sorry to hear of your emergency and can fully sympathize.
About 9 months ago I suddenly had impaired vision, looking through black streaks, and at the time was very near to a Specsaver shop. I went in, explained the problem and they immediately inspected.
Luckily they didn't send me on to the eye hospital, I had detached soft membrane from the back of the eye. They fully described the problem and issued me with printed details and instructions for the future.
The charge for this service ....nothing and I am more than grateful to them.
I later followed up with a visit to an eye specialist, just to be sure and he confirmed the diagnosis.
At the time it was very scary and I am grateful for the help I received. Incidentally, I am not connected to Specsavers and don't have my specs from them.
I wish you well
Regards

Can someone please describe what a 'floater' in the eye is please... aside from the obvious one! For me it is colored particles floating randomly through my field of vision normally in one eye only. It is a similar effect to looking through a kaleidoscope but none of the objects have symmetry and are totally random and few in number.

Have got, always had little Herring bonesthat float across the eye. The more you try to look at them the more they drift away.

Sorry to hear that Howard, take care and what frustration with the new toy waiting to play. I've had 2 of these Bus Lane fines annoying in the extreme one in the 4/4 Sport in central London and the other in Plymouth.

I’m grateful for the warning Pete, I’m overdue an eye test and it’s a timely reminder to have a check up. Sorry to read of your situation, Howard, hopefully a temporary blip and normal service will resume, we’re all looking forward to reading about your new purchase I had a similar bus lane fiasco in Aberdeen, where the signage and white lines were misleading, I explained this in a letter to them and they let me off.

Thanks for all the good wishes . My main message was not well expressed but is if you get changes in your eyes get them checked. A big Thank you to the NHS I was diagnosed at 13:00 and was wheeled into the operating theatre at 17:30 for an hour long operation.

I've had floaters all my life, and am short sighted with astigmatism.
I used to stand on the school playing fields looking at the sky and watching them. They show up well against blue sky. Mine are mixed. One or two are tiny black dots with a perfect ring around. Some are like seaweed moving with the tide. Some are like frogspawn.
They are all translucent and not noticeable day to day.
The time to get checked is when you get something new......or a visual dusturbance.
Very occasionally I get a migraine aura, which is interesting...scintillating scotoma I think its called......
