Tried to start my M3W today for first time since last Nov. Brutal winter this year and stored in unheated garage. Despite using a battery tender battery didn’t have enough charge to turn her over. Time for new battery. The battery is still supplying some charge to the ECU. Any problem with completely disconecting the ECU from power during battery change in the M3W?

Not a problem. Only thing that will need resetting is clock!

Before buying a new one, have you tried jump starting/battery pack, driving it for c.10 miles and then trying to start it the next day? The display should show something like 14.2 while running (if you can start it) and if you have an immobiliser running that might fall to 12.3 overnight and still be healthy.

If you have the Banner Starting Bull standard battery still fitted I would consider replacing it with something better, they don't last long and are very marginal even when new. There are a number of better alternatives listed in the Alternative Parts List.

Word to the wise: Make sure to triple-check the dimensions of the replacement battery. From experience, some of the replacements that come up as equivalent are not really so, given the battery tray in the M3W. Good luck!

All great advice.

I ended up using an available U.S. battery recommendation from a previous thread. Today I bought a Xtreme AGM Battery item number CYLA30LXTA from our local Batteries Plus store. I picked this battery because it’s dimensions fit into the existing space without modifications.

It fit and worked great. After six months of hibernation started right up. Beautiful weather today and went for a nice ride.

Couple extra notes. I placed thin cork under the top cross plate to secure the battery better. Also if you use this battery, use the longer of the two bolts supplied and use two washers for the negative terminal and one washer for the positive terminal. That will be self explanatory when you install it.

Thank you all.

Sportster engines do not like sitting for long periods. Bearings can be affected by brinnelling. Brinelling can be caused by a heavy load resting on a stationary bearing for an extended length of time. The result is a permanent dent or "brinell mark".
If possible turn the engine over occasionally & move the car if on its wheels or turn them if jacked up.

Brinnell marks, Thats a new one on me. Does that impact both barbet and roller bearings?
