I wasn't driving a Morgan last week on holiday in Yorkshire - sort of wish I had been as the roads were brilliant. Anyway driving along an A road @ around 45mph I had a huge stone that was launched by an HGVs tyre come straight at my car windscreen - it was big in that I saw it coming - the size of a small bird. It hit with a huge bang low on the screen and made a 5 inch area of damage in the glass - enough for glass shards to sit on the dash of the Mini. Any faster and I think it would have entered the cabin.

Very scary - it occurred to me that had I been in my ( now departed 3 wheeler) without a helmet it could very well have hit me and caused a serious injury. I don't know if you guys use a helmet - I didn't very often - but after that I think I would all the time.

While I wear a half helmet for rides around town, I now use a full face helmet for longer rides on faster roads. About a year ago I was hit by a stone from a small car in front of me. I was easily four car lengths back. I suffered a reasonable sized gash and was quite disoriented by the event. While I like nothing more than good weather and the M3W with the wind in my face, it's evident that the wind screen affords you little protection. Spending a good amount of time in a comprehensive shop and getting a helmet that fits properly takes some of the sting out. I miss the noise, however. Even the bevel box.

I mostly drive with a helmet now. Too many bugs and things being flung from cars in front of me or, worse, large trucks coming at me. At first for warmth and a bit of quiet, now its for self defense.

A friend of mine who rides a Triking was forced off the road and the car rolled and tumbled. Total toast. He wore a helmet in a car with no roll bar. He lived through it and suffered a dislocated shoulder and generally banged up but was out and about in a few days.

A wake up call indeed...

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

two years ago I threw out a helmet that was scratched when I did a body slam to the pavement (driver crossed in front of me-illegally). Also, Virginia is a "lid law" state

That sounds like you got lucky. An older person would have broken bones for sure.

Let me see.... my left clavicle was in three major pieces. One broken rib... one UGLY bruise, and then there was my dislocated right thumb in the palm of my hand. And I wasn't going fast by the time I hit her.
