Very tasty! Should give better breathing, too. When I visited Chas Windridge of Mogsport fame to get some AVO shocks for my +4 T16, he suggested that to get much better breathing I should remove the restrictor plate that's spot-welded about half way along the internal pipe of the silencer. (This plate has an approx 1/2inch hole in it, so reducing the effective diameter of the exhaust pipe considerably). The method he suggested sounded rather brutal – knock seven bells out of it with a long steel rod – but I tried it, and it worked! It's made a big difference, too. The engine is much more willing to rev, and the exhaust note has a bit more of a burble. And all this for zero cost! Makes you wonder just what a 'sports' silencer is, though...?

New exhaust looks the DBs (nothing to do with AM!).
Shame I no longer have the +4!

As you can see the exhaust manifold and sports system have been fitted. I am very pleased with the look of the exhaust and very, very pleased with the performance. BHM have always said that the Rover engine is stifled and cannot get enough air into and exhaust out of the engine. Well I have cured the out wards part. It is now a 4 - 2 - 1 system with the lambda probe fitted in the correct place as can be seen from the photos. The old manifold was a 4 - 1 so was very restricted. The new exhaust pipes are larger in diameter with only the front silencer and a straight through rear pipe. Librands gave me a tail pie to put on if the noise was to loud but I sent it back today untried. Being slightly deaf I think the sound is just right. A little louder than the old 4/4. The manifold is fitted to my Cat but is designed to take the sport Cat without any modification but at £400 it will have to wait. Can you place the info on Talk Morgan please as I believe there are other owners with the Rover T16 engine who would benefit from this conversion. Any specific questions please don't hesitate to ask

Keith at BHM is, as you know, very helpful. What you might not know is that he knows well Mark Adams, who worked on my Plus Four. It might be worth talking to both of them. Mark got an extra 30bhp at the wheels from my M16 : basically an Omex ecu and advanced ignition. The only induction change was an ITG filter. This was a development project and deliberately did not stress the engine. After six years I am still very pleased with it. There is a wealth of information on TM about induction -one of the brilliant things about the site- but also interesting stuff under the heading of " interesting conversation regarding M16 engines" on the Rover Tech site. Your exhaust installatiion looks the same as mine -very hard drilling into a ss pipe for the sensor! Regards, Meabh.

This is a photo of the plate that I removed. You can see the three spot welds that held it in place, and you can see just how much of a restriction it gave. Result = A very cheap alternative to a £150 'sports' exhaust!

Hi, I had similar issues with my 1999 T16 +4, and before you go spending any money just check the fuel filter. Just unclip it from its pipes, empty it out into a jar or something, and see if you can easily blow through it. If you can't, get yourself a new one. (If going to a motor factors or standard parts supplier, ask for one from a late 1990's Rover 800). As I've said before, mine was really choked with brown crud so I replaced it and it made quite a difference to the pick-up and general running - as you'd expect. Also see my previous post about removing the restrictor plate that's welded to the inside of the main silencer, as reccommended to me by Chas Windridge. That too made a BIG difference!
