So, my nice new set of ratchet spanners arrived. I got my old spanner bent and filed out to 17mm and set to work. Soon found on my 2011 model, there is no room to get the ratchet spanner onto the nut. So had to open out the bent spanner to 18mm to fit the nut and use a 17mm ratchet on the bolt head. With some cussing, a mm at a time, i managed to get it loose but then...wimped out! There is no way i can see of getting it back on again without kicking my beloved Mog to death in a fit of rage! As for removing the back panel and carpet, again not straightforward and not sure of how well it will go back.
In my case, it was only to improve the recoil and I have decided it’s really not worth it.
The design here simply has not been thought through...just about par for the course for Morgan!!
Anyway, just need to find shelf space now for the ratchet spanners.

Sorry to hear that, I guess it is in the small print that designs may vary without notice. Did you take a photo of the offending item ? I did spend at least one day resisting the desire to investigate the aerodynamic properties of a spanner Out on a centre event today we were musing how to tackle this problem where there is no spare wheel well.

Sorry, didn’t get a photo. On mine, the Timber crossmember seems to be higher than yours, so much so that it has a semi circular cut out and the nut is recessed into it. Hence the impossibility of getting a ratchet spanner on to it. With patience, I am sure I could have got it undone but the worry was how to get it back on again. I could touch but not grip the bolt or nut with fingers, so was not prepared to risk it for the marginal benefits that would acrue.

It seems there is no thought given to the maintenance aspects. I guess the options are to cut away part of the crossmember to get access to the nut and put in a compensating reinforcement, or remove the rear body panel.

It seems there is no thought given to the maintenance aspects. Unfortunately that applies to many makes/models - just look at the number that require partial dismantling just to change a side or main lamp bulb...
