Does anyone know if the manifold on the 2.0 Duratec fitted to the Plus 4 has swirl flaps. My 2007 Plus 4 has the vacuum servo for the flaps, and there is a vacuum feed from the manifold. The swirl flap solenoid is bypassed so there is a constant vacuum to the servo. I can't hear anything happen or move if I apply a vacuum to the servo when the engine isn't running.
Thanks

The Duratec HE 2.0 engine has definitely got swirl flaps. You can see it very well on youtube videos.

Yes, I can see that they are fitted in the Ford passenger car applications, just wasn't sure if they were fitted in the engines purchased by Morgan. Assuming they are fitted, the functionality is defeated by Morgan as the vac pipe from the manifold is Tee'd ( at the swirl flap solenoid input port) to the swirl flap servo, and the solenoid output port is capped. I get a bit of a resonance at 2,500 rpm and am looking for the source, may need to pull the manifold off to see if the flaps move under vacuum. Thanks

What does resonance feel like? Can you feel it through the car and steering wheel or just the engine?

I always thought that swirl flaps went in 2002, or maybe that was when the faulty ones were superceded?

What does resonance feel like? Can you feel it through the car and steering wheel or just the engine? The resonance is similar to a problem I had on another Morgan where the inside of the tail pipe rattled at a certain engine speed. In this case there is a something resonating in the engine bay around 2,500 rpm. It disappears above and below that speed. Occurs when car is moving or stationary. So its just an annoying noise. Everything is screwed down where it should be, and I have gradually improved on the MMC layout and moved bits apart where they touch (but shouldn't). I did disconnect the vac pipe to what may be the swirl flaps but that made no difference.

Fortunately Morgan fitted the later second generation Duratecs to both the 1.8 and 2.0L so the swirl plate issue had been fixed. There are other subtle changes to the later engine including the cooling system.

I did disconnect the vac pipe to what may be the swirl flaps but that made no difference. I had a slight resonance at 2600rpm both stationary and moving. Took me a while to track it down and initially thought it was coming from the engine. Everything was tight as you say but did find changing the vertical adjustment on the exhaust changed it. Eventually tracked it down to the exhaust silencer box. Having stripped the box out to check the baffles were not loose I discovered the car was originally fitted with a MEX 1107 through exhaust (you would have not known as it wasn’t particularly noisy). I changed the box to a MEX 1105 and it instantly fixed the problem. Nice and smooth since without that annoying resonance. Worth getting down and checking the little metal plate with the number on. See pic below.

Those nice thoughtful people managed to fit the silencer with the plate on the top surface. It is a MEX 1105. I do have a selection of Morgan exhaust boxes so I may try swapping it over if I don't find the source. I did clamp a stethoscope probe to the exhaust and couldn't detect it as a source, also clamped a probe to the bell housing and again didn't sound like the source, and I believe it is a single mass flywheel so no DMF issues. The most 'noise' seemed to come from the area of the chain cover, so I don't know if some slack in the chain could produce a resonance. Thanks

I could move/change the resonance point just by slackening off the L shaped exhaust support bracket and applying a little upwards force under the bracket with a trolley jack so an easy check before swapping boxes.
I thought that it was a dual mass but couldn’t say for sure. One thing that can get noisy towards the front and near the chain area is the belt tensioner bearing.
Good luck.
