Comparing with GPS my odometer is not far off, certainly closer than the speedo, mine reads near 10% high. Legally speedos cannot under read but can read upto 10% high.
I changed the fuel sender for the longer VDO unit. Whilst closer than standard it still is inaccurate. The reading on start up will drop as soon as you move off & varies with the attitude of the car so trip meter reset on refill is best.

The fuel gauge sending unit is a variable resistor.
Pull the sending unit, and remove the outer tube.
Inside are two parallel wires with a wiper on a float that connects the two wire. These wires oxidize and will create an intermittent connection.
Use some very fine sandpaper and gently wipe down each wire where the wiper makes contact with the wires.
I had the same problem and the fix was as describe above. The displayed level no longer jumps around... but I use the fuel gauge as a low I.Q. suggestion. When I get to 200 miles on the odometer, I fill up. I think this bit of advice is worth repeating, particularly after a winter of inactivity with your M3W. My fuel gauge was all over the place when I put the car back on the road back in the spring. I gave the wires a quick rub down with some fine abrasive and the indications stabilised. I wouldn't go as far as to say they were accurate but they were much better. The 280 mm sender will give more reasonable indications than the standard 240mm one but is still not to be relied on.

If a person is installing a 280mm sender AND AT THE SAME TIME putting in a real gauge with a sweep dial that had a 90-0 ohm rating as opposed to a 0-90 ohm rating couldn’t you just swap the sending unit wires so the gauge worked properly and not in reverse?

No, resistance gauges are not polarity sensitive and swapping the wires will not change the resistance over the measured range. The sender is constructed to produce a given resistance at empty (say 0 ohms) and a given value at full (say 90 ohms), with of course the range in between. Changes to the external wiring will have no impact on that . If you were to install a 90 (full) to 0 (empty) type gauge with a 0 (full) to 90 (empty) sender then it would work, but would read 'backwards', i.e Full when empty and Empty when full. Gauges and senders always need to compatible (or made compatible with a signal conditioner-Google Fuel Sender Signal Converter).

A new steel pole 290mm sender from Car Builder Solutions 0-190 ohms
coupled to a VDO sweep gauge 0 -190 ohms
I disconnected the original sender wire and installed new wire direct to the gauge.

The sender is FUSEN290 from the Car Solutions website and the gauge is a VDO 301-010-002k
Mounted on the steering column to the left using a homemade 2mm alloy bracket
