Bonesie/HeadlessBlue..the procedure you use is the one shown to me at the Factory and by my Dealer when collecting my new 4/4 in 2014.
As you say it relieves the pressure on the cable operation.

If you don't deploy this method eventually the handle will pull away from the side panel as it only has a very shallow screw, ask me how I know
