Lovely trip to Buckfast Abbey for a great tour around the private gardens from the Head Gardener, beautiful day with an informative talk and a good lunch at the on site Grange Restaurant. I find gardening boring but herself is keen and this young guy made it interesting for all, why is it always my car that gets all the crap off the new plants that "we" need for the garden. https://www.buckfast.org.uk/product/tickets/private-garden-areas-july-2019

93 mile round trip to JLR Classic in Ryton for a tour round with DonMog. A grand day out and we saw a lot of temptation. Apparently, their e-Type rebuild is done in 6 weeks. They are also building the V8 Land-Rovers as well as restoring Series I Landies in volume. Well worth a visit.

No, it's too hot (39°c) and perhaps 41°c tomorrow. There are also restrictions based on critair classification if you want to go inside Paris.

Same in Cologne, Jacques, I had some spare time today to make a round trip but it was not pleasant at all to start. I left her in the garage. I never was a „green“ climatic fighter but I must admit that something is really changing. Last year it was the same here, from June to September. Today we had a new heat record in Germany since many decades but tomorrow it will come a new heat record, 41 degrees in Cologne.

We are at our holiday house at the moment and I went down home yesterday. Up in the mountains at 1,000 metres above sea level it is livable but down a lake level, 200 metres above sea level, I was glad to have the aircon at 2 pm, even if it is not very effective with the top down. I think if I had much more distance to travel I would have put the top up. At the moment, after midnight, it is 21° here and 27° down at the lake, however because of the humidity the feel is 6° more. It peaked at 35° at Mandello today. Storms are expected for the weekend. At least that will cool things down a bit.

That's too damn hot on the lake at night to sleep that's for sure. Talking of lightning strikes in real time or historically this is a fun thing to play with No1 Daughter discovered it being the scientist that she is and knew I'd enjoy playing with it too. Lightning past and present globally

Lightning past and present globallyThat is interesting. I had tenants in Sydney who specialised in registering lightning strikes. Apparently one of the main functions of this activity was to verify insurance claims for lightning strike damage. They had sensors planted all over the country and I think in some way they also used satellite data. Unfortunately for me the company was absorbed into a sister company and closed their Sydney offices.

A drive upto the local Halfords, turned into about a 25 mile drive in the sunshine. I headed inland and chose tree lined back roads. East Devon is very busy with visitors at the moment, but few would know or venture onto the route I took, Talking of thunder storms, one of my friends who plays golf told me he always carries a 2 Iron with him, if there is the threat of lightning. Because “even God can’t hit a 2 Iron”

Talking of thunder storms, one of my friends who plays golf told me he always carries a 2 Iron with him, if there is the threat of lightning. Because “even God can’t hit a 2 Iron” Whilst working on Radio Stations in RSA in the 1970's we had a trip to the South African Bureau of Standards in Pretoria to see the effects of lightning strikes, they have a particularly high incidence in the Natal region around the Drakensberg Mountain range where we had a set of 4 stations. Amongst many other exhibits we were shown a mummified and thoroughly cooked golfer with his club on the upward sweep - so you may like to warn your pal.. We had sensors on our radio stations at the base of the mast which measured the magnitude of the strike we fed this data back to the SABS as research for them. It could take a few hours to several days to put them back online after a severe strike, interesting work in a beautiful country full of friendly tolerant people, we made some great friends out there great larger than life characters full of fun. If you are caught outside in a storm keep your legs together and crouch down to minimise your height, keeping your legs together reduces the "step voltage" gradient across your body should you get struck. This is why you see quite a few dead cows in such conditions as the distance between their front and rear legs equates to 1.000's of volts difference which stops the brain and heart instantaneously.
