When insuring Tarka I always tell the broker that I never lock the car, hood up or hood down.
They accept that this is logical and hood up it could result in a very expensive claim to replace a slashed foot.

Hood down there is never anything in the car that is of value. I do take the facia plate off from the head unit, but that is all.
The insurers are more interested that the car has a BMW immobiliser.

As to the keyless entry stuff, I have discovered that I can lock and unlock the AMG using my I phone. How does that work? Can anyone explain?
I don't ever use the remote to lock or unlock the car, as long as it is in my pocket all I have to do is briefly hold the door handle. I assume the key fob talks to the car, but is that as open to "cloning" as using the fob in the traditional way?
Are we back to the 1970s where the use of a steering wheel lock or crook lock was the only sure way to secure the car?

The phone key is based on NFC near field communication that is also used for payment.
You have to register on mercedes me with your phone number. For the starting procedure a mobile phone with nfc as well as secure sim is needed - will be checked by the system.

The service is free of charge for one mobile and three years of use.

Security should be better than the remote key as the distance to the car is much smaller and therefor harder to spy.

As a thief you shoud have the sim data the imei and the protocoll at the same time;)

We could be. Honest John has been recommending this for a few years.

Love it. "The service is free of charge for one mobile and three years of use."

Then they charge you an nice fee to subscribe to it, plus all the other services, navigator updates, etc.

Even Microsoft doesn't charge for OS updates any more but you have to pay the car manufacturer. Companies don't give a damn because it is all tax deductible expenses and they probably turn over leased cars every couple of years anyway, but the private users get shafted.

Of course you could always trade in the car every three years and let someone else have the problem

That is exactly what they want you to do.

On every car I've ever owned I always fit a SPDT switch in line with the ignition lead and hide it somewhere that is only known to the family, it's a 10 minute job at zero cost and completely effective.

Never fitted it on the Morgan as I've had battery isolate switches on them.
