My 2018 Plus4 - a 2.0 L GDI rarely gets above 35 - I think it is running rich as the tailpipe is very black. How is this adjusted? Is there a simple adjustment or does it need a full Ecuador’s remap?

I also meant to ask the costs of the manifold and Ecu remap

Librands advertise their manifold complete with ceramic cat for £1360 plus vat and delivery. I had a remap done at Williams about 5 years ago and it was £400 then, so looks as if it approaches £2k overall and even more if you don’t fit manifold yourself. That’s quite a lot of petrol!! Hope this is of some help.

Robbie, my previous +4 2016 gdi sounded similar to yours in being rather sooty. I took it to the dealer for a ECU 'flash' which was done free of charge. It changed things significantly, much leaner and seemed more willing at lower revs.

As yours is only 2018 I would think a polite moan to your dealer may result in the same. Worth a try.

My newer +4 doesn't have the issue, I suspect a lot of these 'upgrades' we never get to hear about.

I'm a bit confused. I thought the GDi engine was supposed to be cleaner than the preceding Duratec? The GDi is rated at 149g/km whereas the Duratec was rated at 189g/km.

But friends of mine with the Duratec engined cars regularly get 40+mpg. When you apply the conversion factor to get from mpg to g/km CO2, the Duratec at 40mpg shows it's producing only 169g/km (ie it's more efficient than rated) whereas the GDi at 35mpg gives 193g/km, ie much dirtier than rated.

So it looks like whoever did the ECU map for the Morgan Duratec did a bloody good job, and whoever did the map for the GDi should probably go and have a chat with them to find out what they did :-)

Hi Hawki
The car feels a lot happier and smoother to drive; torque is definitely improved; it doesn’t have to be worked so hard to make progress.

The dead spot at idle when pulling away has been completely removed, it is actually almost pleasant being stuck in traffic now as it’s very easy to pull away from rest smoothly.

The flat spot at 3000RPM is almost completely gone, general in-gear acceleration is also much better.

Induction noise is louder than before and the exhaust note is louder when driving hard, at cruising speeds it isn’t noticeably louder (to me).

Over-run crackle and burbles are almost eliminated which was a surprise, although it does often pop loudly when changing gear or slowing,

I am more than happy with it and totally recommend it. I hope that a custom remap is the last part of the jigsaw!

My GDI tailpipe is black, but emissions on the recent test were ok once he'd mastered the hair trigger throttle.

But my Roadster, is way cleaner on the test rig, even though its older and dirtier. The pointers never budge from bang on the green.

I had mine done at Williams in May - the cost was very similar to what you have said - £1350 for manifold and cat, and £332 for the ECU remap. I also paid £485 for the sports exhaust. The labour was £545, and then the VAT was £482! Total inc VAT was £2892.

That doesn't sound right. presumably the £332 for the remap is all labour anyway which leaves £545 for just fitting the manifold and exhaust? Surely it can't be more than a couple of hours work tops?

My 2015 GDi gets around 38mpg overall. I’m happy with that. Had the Flash thing done a couple of years ago which made all the difference. Love it!
