I have made these very light bonnet stays for 5£ in one hour.

Made of anodized aluminium tubes of 8mm diameter.

Fixing at the protruding bonnet knob.

The end holds without any additional constructions.

The clue – inserted neodyme magnet (with a drop of glue) of 2.1kg power and coaxial magnetization (the magnetic poles are not at the ends, but by side) holds the stays reliable in its place.

The other end is a simple stainless M4 screw vith nylon washers to avoid rattling. The hole for the bolt is threaded, so the tension of the nylon washers can be better adjusted.

For the windy days – a bit primitive, but the rubbers are anyway in the car, holding the wrapped tools.

Or for another fiver, you could buy a quick release ball joint, (as fitted to certain proprietary bonnet stays), from Ebay and do away with magnets and rubber bands!

Indeed a true alternative! With some additional drilling and holes. But I like to be creative...
