Not changed my BB oil from Redline Shockproof 80W140 for the 80W250 yet but will do before the Switzerland trip. I will let you know how it goes with a "screamer" as my BB certainly does once it gets warmed up fully.

I noticed an improvement with 80w250, plus I’ve added some Tufoil treatment. Not drastic, but measurable difference.

Kankel,
Doesn’t Tufoil make a gear oil ? Did you notice the difference before adding the Tufoil?

Thank you all for the tip. Managed to get the last four litres that Opie had in stock. We live in hope that it will tame the whine.

I did not try it without tufoil, so cannot comment.

What mileage are you folks accumulating? After 8000 miles my box is noticeably quieter, especially the high pitched scream. I have been using 90W- 140w all along.

BTW, came across this from five years ago. Did anyone try it?

I drove mine long enough to heat the oil, pulled into the garage, and placed a low oil pan under the BB. I unscrewed the big lower drain plug, and let the hot goop flow out.

I opened the upper fill plug just above the drain, and let it all stay open and dripping overnight.

I plugged the bottom drain, and refilled the top port until it back dripped.

I plugged the upper fill port, made sure all was tight, and went for a ride.

I did this 4 times, using Moroso Climbing Lube, drained it hot each time, and got more of the black goop out each time.

By the 4th oil hot oil change, the fluid coming out was the same color as what was going in, and the BB is now, well almost, quiet.

M3W55, that was quite the routine! Any particular reason you used Moroso Climbing Lube? Or was it just a lube oil you had on hand?

Last winter I drained mine. Only a small amount of thick black liquid was in the pan while draining all night. I then ran kerosene through a few times to hopefully clean out any remaining black liquid. I then filled with Redline to the fill hole and plugged it. Then I added quit a bit more through the vent hole using a special squirt bottle. In my opinion that little bit of oil to the fill hole is not near enough! Put some oil in it! It now runs very quiet and I haven’t noticed even one drop leaking through the vent. Think about it....all the differentials like a Ford 9 is filled at least half way full.
