Thanks Bob still waiting for a reply got Junes car back today they fixed the sump etc at Beamish mog about 70 quid . Looks like the signaller had a laps of concentration that could have taken our lives and maybe others , but I was not watching anyone everything seemed to happen in a flash . It was as though I had another head on never thought I could be so switched on and so fast . Once again thanks .

Bob - surely the signal is interlocked with the barriers so unless the barriers are down the signal is red???

If not it's just a matter of time. An HGV wouldn't have got across.

The local area is covered by SSI (Solid State Interlocking) and the barriers are interlocked locally using track circuit relays housed in an REB (Relocatable Equipment Building) or barrier pedestal, which have to operate in a certain sequence to allow the barriers to raise and lower. They will be controlled by the signaller using an FDM (Frequency Division Multiplex) which is vital (fail-safe).

There will be a data logger at the main relay room which should have a specific logger for the barriers and their times of operation.

I am curious to know which green light JtL saw, as the road lights at a crossing are flashing red and amber.

I presume it was the nearside barriers that started to lower leaving the off side ones raised until the nearside had finished lowering.

As you say there would not have been a green light on the crossing however the lights ceasing to flash and the barrier going up would normally indicate that it was OK to cross A mental green light if you wish.

Normally there is quite a bit of time between the barrier coming down and a train crossing. It sounds as though the track circuit failed to register for some reason or there is a sequence failure which allowed the barriers to be momentarily raised after the south bound train had passed but did not keep them down because the north bound train was arriving at the same time.

I was always under the impression that the barrier sequence should start at at least 60 seconds before the train passes at line speed. That would mean that the train should have been at least 2 miles away when it triggered the sequence. As John describes it it may have been less than a mile away when the sequence was triggered.

Probably all BS and no doubt Bob will correct me in a moment.

All I saw was green smallish lights flashing as the lights started to go up , but quick as a flash they turned red and I shot under did not think of the roof etc . My instinct was to get away . My mind had kicked into survival and I was out is seconds . Thank God the clutch did not slip or I stalled the car . Oddly it started to hit me what happened over the last few days and I get flash backs . Give it time and it will go away . Daughter and future son in law have gone car hunting again . I dropped a hint but he let it fall on stony ground just when I needed a bit of help . Wait till its his turn what a shallow person .
