I totally agree. The driver is the most important element. OK this example below shows an under average Lotus driver driving an over average performance car. And then he crashed at 2:50. It is a very striking example of a hasty out-of-smooth driving style vs. a relatively underpowered but smooth driven car, the Miata who makes the video.

Great video.

I could imagine being able to drive a Sigma 4/4 Morgan like the Mazda... lovely smooth and quick gear changes with great RPM drops and next gear matches.

On the other hand, there is NO way a 3.7 Morgan could be driven like that... the 'rev hang' would simply make it impossible. I have driven several and they all have the same 'trait'.

For 'cruising', the Roadster is a great car/engine combination. For a 'Sports Car' on a track day or enthusiastic driving, IMHO, not a good combination.

I think this all boils down to driving style, experience and 'expectations'.... and we are all different in that. Thankfully!

That's exactly why the old classic Mini is such fun on the road. Keeping up with much faster cars is such fun in a classic Mini.

It amazes me how people over estimate the ability of their car and then proceed to slag off far more higher performance cars. Sorry I don’t post very often, but I was compelled to respond to this.

But there are also 3.7 without 'rev hang'.
I have a very early 3.7 from 2012 and up to now never ever I had 'rev hang'.
As we have motorways without speed limit in Germany, I could even drive my 3.7 up to topspeed, no 'rev hang' at all.
By the way on this motorways and higher speed, the 6th gear is very comfortable on long-distance runs.

Doing the same for a new Roadster (which I've driven and enjoyed) would work out at £70k in the form that I'd like it. Given that the balance would update the daily driver I'm tempted.

OK so it's too early to say what the Plus 6 will turn out like (except for the potential to overheat - anyone clocked the changed front end since launch?) I thought I'd ask what the views were on a brand new 3.7. I know they have a reputation for going backwards through a hedge but that's an operator error in my book.

By the way, I'm still on the original battery after 15years - chuck it or stick with it as it's always on a conditioner (battery lasted longer than the conditioner which came with the car)

Thoughts welcome

I had a new 3.7... there were no 'rev hang' issues with it - but I thought the engine sounded like a bag of spanners. There was a real 'buzz' around 2,500 rpm - a clatter. I heard this on several 3.7's. No other issues other than (of course) the suspension from a medieval ox cart. smile

I traded mine in (at a huge loss) for a new 4.8 +8 which I really like.... drives like a modern sports car and sounds like Brian Blessed being assaulted in a shower cubicle.

My preference would be to get the +6 if you can stretch to it.

Not sure whether a non owner is permited to comment but I will do so all the same. The Plus 6 has a modern chassis and suspension designd by an ex Lotus engineer I believe. The chassis will be way more rigid than the old trad one in the roadster and the suspension at both ends will work properly unlike a trad. Appearance apart it will be a modern car. But is modern what you want?

The +6 would be my choice except for the price. I have driven a roadster several times and IMO its a car with more power than the chassis is capable of coping with except maybe on billiard table smooth tarmac. Bit like old style ameican muscle cars . The trads with a lot less power are a lot more fun because you are able to rag them in a way you cant safely do with the roadster. Thrashing a slower car is always mor fun than holding back in a fast one.

I’ve had my 3.7 Roadster for three years now after rejecting the ARP4. Total miles 12,000.
The Negative things over the time are for me .
1/ High Road tax ,my number one hate .
2/ Suspension bottoming out on pot holes but that’s a Morgan thing not only the Roadster.
3/ Clutch a bit like a switch in or out ,and occasionally you can forget and snap the passengers neck.
4/ Engine does sound like a bag of spanner’s when you rev it .
5/ Rev hang ,you do have to wait to change gear when having fun but ok in normal driving.

Now the good bits.
1/ Power and Torque, it’s addictive I love the way it performs so effortlessly.
2/ Power steering, transforms the drive, easy and relaxed.
3/ Exhaust note on acceleration now I’ve fitted new silencers, sounds as powerful as it is .
4/ 6 speed gear box is sweet ( first not used very often) Great low revving cruiser on motorways.
5/ When the VVT kicks in its bonkers ,so fast ,quite addictive.
6/ Heated seats, makes winter driving so much more enjoyable.

So some negative points but I love the car .
How would I make it better ?
Fit a quick rack ,this would make a big improvement .
Adjustable dampers / SSL front suspension.
Clutch release valve.
Jobs for next year !! Or get a Plus six.

I can only second that dear Peter!

And: been there, done that (quick rack, SSL front & rear, AR disc brakes all round, AR ECU... etc.) - made an already nice car even nicer (and a lot more bonkers too!)

Would always do it again!

It doesn´t matter how fast it becomes, but how it becomes fast. laugh2
