Can it be cracked without any fuel smell ? And will every crack develop to a fuel leak ? My cracks were in the brackets supporting the tank at the front, others have had them both here and the brackets under the tank towards the rear. As this crack is in the bracket attached to the tank it is potentially not a petrol leak source ( your question) , but is important to stop your tanks becoming potentially loose or vibrating potentially causing a leak ! see this thread Would it make sense to put rubber bands as extra help for the spanner bands ?

Chocadoodledoo ................2012 model, both brackets noticed cracked two weeks ago at 12,000 mls braces fitted. Strap tension was fine. Vibration is the problem and alloy is prone to cracks, full stop.
Skullmog ..... cracks in both left and right upper brackets.. made new plates and used two part glue that they use to make aluminium chassis! which i ponced off my friendly car body shop.... one strap was loose other tight, they're now both tight

Possibly , I put thin strips of wood ( about 3mm thick ) between the tank and bands to space the bands out so i could really get the band tension higher and grip the tanks better. Without this mine wouldnt tension up enough. As a longer term solution I am considering a fabricated steel frame to support the alloy tanks, bolted to the chassis, but just ideas at this stage.

There have been other cases that are not on this list. I would guess that this problem will be present on most cars and that some preventative maintenance would be a good idea. Tighten retaining straps and reinforce brackets (even if not cracked yet) as a minimum to prevent future tank leaks.

That is an impressive list and I bet it will grow. Just checked my car. Both sides cracked Checked my wife’s car. No cracks at all What did I do what she didn’t do ?  The good thing is: I don’t have to worry anymore if I will get cracks, but she still have the worries.

Checked mine today, no cracks but tightened both straps as they were slightly loose.

I'll add that while both of my tanks were out I had the fuel vent line re-positioned higher in the fill stalk. It was the mechanic's impression that it was too low and could therefore could easily flood the charcoal canister; as my canister was definitely previously flooded with gas.
My crack fix was tank removal, drain and clean, and then properly weld in reinforced brackets. Although only one tank had a crack I had both done while it was all apart.
I'm not sure about gluing reinforcing parts to an already cracked tank but it seems like that is a reasonable preventative strategy before cracks appear. I'd wonder how the gas vs. glue will hold over the long term.
I'll speculate that this is just another Morgan 'feature' meant to increase the excitement of motoring in an M3W; a chance to literally 'go out in a blaze of glory'!

Where should i look for cracks on the tanks exactly? As i have everything disassembled to add some more dynamat. I added metal plates on the frame just after the belt adjustment bracket because even after tightening out the belts they were still a bit loose.
