custom cutting AN 6 braided steel lines
This was one of the parts that needed grinding down on one edge so that the Ultracool supplied oil filter adapter plate fit flush against the S&S engine block. We then ground down the other oil filter adapter part to match the block plate.
We had to go back and regrind just a little more off so that the base plate fits flat. Very important or there will be a massive leak!

You can see the set screw locking the bracket in place on the front cross members.
Final mounting - (Dan) We did use a self-tapping screw to screw in from the bottom of the mount into the frame cross member to help secure the bracket on the frame rail. (so it can't spin down or up under speed)
Next up is to make some custom bumperettes with day time running lights mounted on the ends of the two frame rails
Here are a few pictures from Adrian Bowden installation
He extended the front license plate hardware and made a stainless steel shelf to mount the oil cooler on.
Hi JVS ....... Yes, I know that Earl Sutton sold an Ultra Oil Cooler to Adrian Bowden because I am that man!
My 2014 M3W runs fine when it is moving but, the area I live in in the UK is frequent by many holidaymakers in the summer and the roads are packed. Not like the miles of roads in the USA? Once stuck in traffic queues (lines?) I could feel the S&S getting hot and tinkling. Many times I was forced to pull over because, despite the fan on the rear of the cylinders things were getting hot. I have only done 3000 miles but in that time have found the oil to be black and burnt (20w 50 Synthetic) with regular oil changes.
The Ultra Cool I chose was for the RF-1/2 FLH Reefer Cooler. Quite honestly it is academic which one you choose because they appear to be the same only the length of the pipes vary and you have to fit longer pipes anyway (£150.00p from Speedflow UK). Whilst choosing Earl responded to my emails by return but as soon as I had placed my order for the cooler kit (from North West Harley UK) his replies dried up. But I suppose he is a very busy man-beware the enthusiastic amateur! I was concerned about the compatibility between HD and S&S.
Anyway, the Ultra Oil Cooler is a fine, well engineered bit of kit designed for HD Motorcycles with plenty of access and space. It is a very tight fit indeed on the M3W so do not undertake it lightly and allow at least 3 days!!!(& nights!). Morgan have left the two engine mounting bolts on the LH side over the oil filter too long and these have to be removed and cut about 2.5cms off them. There is also quite a lot of wiring routing alongside the oil filter area which is a nuisance. The fitting is a classic sandwich adaptor between the filter and the housing which has to be torqued up to 20ft lbs and it is no joke getting a torque wrench in there. another plate with the pipe fittings (AN6) and electrical spades for the thermal switch has to be bolted to this plate with 6x allan bolts. Once again they are supposed to be torqued up to 6ft lbs. These are totally inaccessible for a torque wrench and so I tightened them up in order to a guessed torque and flat (I hope). Once the new pipes 80 & 68cm are fitted they can be routed across the underside of the torque compensator housing because there is natural recess and they are no lower than the existing pipes from the oil tank to the engine. The next job is to fit the cooler. It is not so important to get it in the ram air slipstream because it has 2x electric fans which are cut in by the thermal switch in the sandwich plate at about 190 degrees. The oil always flows through the cooler the fans then operate if the oil gets above about 190 degrees.
Space was once again a problem. In the end I opted to form a aluminium platform behind the number plate in front of the cam chain housing. The number plate then mounts back giving about 2cm clearance from the front of the cooler. It all looks very discreet and not an add on. I chose the chrome rather than the Black cooler and it looks the part. The cooler and mounting plate can easily be removed with the pipes attached should you need access to the timing belt etc. I have a badge bar and so that is going to require further thought.
Because of the access problems normal tools do not fit. I had to "modify" a 17mm jaw spanner (wrench) to tighten the AN-6 pipe fittings and shorten an allan key to tighten the sandwich plate. The tools in the kit are no good at all.
Then it was just a matter of ty-wrapping the pipes and making it all look neat. Running the wiring back into the cockpit and setting up the neon indicator was fairly straight forward. I did fit a switch in the live feed to the fan so that I can switch them off at the end of a run or when parked to prevent draining the battery.
So far the results have been quite remarkable and so far no leaks!! Much quieter and it appears to pull better?
Watch all of Earl's videos on line but don't be conned into thinking it will take "a couple of hours to fit". That only applies to an HD not a M3W.
