found this gadget for ford engined cars, 4 and 6 cylinders. Might be just the job for my now points equipped car? electronic ignition modules I will buy one and give you the results, heck of a lot cheaper than the 123Ignition that I was keen on

OK if you have a Ford Dissie and non-ballasted coil.

hi Graham, my coil has an external ballast . I will disconnect it and connect up as per instructions?
is that feasible?

Yes, but I'd suggest changing the coil for one that is designed to run at 12V all the time. You'll end up cooking the ballasted variety in short order...

so I just have to buy a standard 12v coil? and discard the ballast?
so are you saying that ballasted coils dont run at 12v all the time? if so, what do they run at when working?

Hi Peter, usually something around 8V. The ballast is switched out of circuit when you turn the key to 'Start', i.e. when starter motor is in circuit to give a fatter spark for starting. So, yes, you will need to buy a coil that is rated to run at 12V continuously... I'll see if I can find a name/number on mine (and attempt to measure those plates at the same time...

I've got a dim memory of doing something like this and the tacho wouldn't run correctly. I'm afraid I can't remember exactly what the problem was or how I resolved it. I run an Aldon Ignitor with a Lucas 12v Sports Coil.

This system seems to work with the Hall Effect (magnetos). Unfortunately not for me - positive earth on my old 4/4.
I'm looking forward to your experiences anyway, Peter.

Graham, thanks for the advice, my coil looks like a ford one , the same as the dissy (motocraft), I contacted the company and they said that it should not matter, Quote: Thank you for your email. In most cases the coil and ballast can be left the same as before and only if there is a problem with starting should there be a change to that part of the systems. Now I'm confused yet again 
If you are doing nothing, how do you know when you are finished?
