I’ve been hearing a rattle at idle and finally figured out where it’s coming from. Title says it all. It’s right side counterpart is quiet at idle and even when I bang on it with my hand with the engine off. All screws and bolts are tight on both. Any ideas?

The clearance between mudguard and tyre is tight, have you tried adjusting the mounting bolts or elongating the holes, assuming the welds etc. are all ok?

Based on our experience, the link to the steering arm cracks then breaks giving increasing levels of rattle. More seriously, you can also experience progressive fracturing of the welds holding the mudguard together - this also gives rattles. Thus far, we re-weld it but the ultimate solution is something much lighter and more robust - for example the G56 carbon mudguards that we gather are now in use by a few players....

Oh Dear, not more cracks.....

I'm not saying that this is your problem, but it's worth checking. Try rocking the mudguard back and forth (front to rear) of the car. There should be no movement, but if there is......

The mudguard bolts on to a thick silver anodised plate and this plate worked loose on a friend's car. Getting to the four black hex socket bolts to tighten it back up was a bit of a pain because the hub, brake caliper & disc have to be removed to gain access.



Good news is that since tightening the problem hasn't reoccurred.

Nuts and bolts working loose on a vehicle with a V-twin engine? WOW, that is a first.

My mudguards have always broken multiple times because of Vtwin's vibrations.
I fixed the problem permanently by simply removing the mudguards

The G56 mudguards must be fine but the price is excessively high.
I think to make a mini stainless steel fender by my Belgian manufacturer of exhausts, something very light and robust

But then again, it is the shaking.

Your photo shows a failure point that maybe could be strengthened by using a metal sleeve over the original rather than bolting to a tang you would then have to bolt through a tube.

It might work :-)
