Silly question perhaps, but what did you do with the original one-shot oiler system?

Dave, There are some recommendations to use heavy lube oil 120 (150?) weight, instead of grease, in the top nipple. I think engine oil is too thin and can 'wash' grease out - it certainly thins it.

Wyndales, My car never had a one shot oiler the later cars have a grease nipple at the top of the suspension instead.
I gather that if you want to get rid of the one shot oiler the thing is to replace the pipe at the oiler pump with a ball bearing which seals the outlet, remove the pipes and replace the fitting on the top of the suspension with a nipple. I gather though that there are many views as to what the lubricant should be for these cars which have been so changed!!
Cheers

Dave, When I renewed the king pins last year, the new S/S ones still had the oiler hole in the top of the shaft. It was definitely larger than one mm, probably about 2 to 3 mm in dia. It terminated a distance down the shaft at a machined groove around the circumference of the shaft. That is where the oil would then dribble out and down the pin to the disk rotors! I did some research on the mater at the time and there was information that the hole could be further drilled out to enable grease to be channelled down the kingpin and emerge not at the machined groove, but to go further down the shaft, and emerge at the exact position of the top bush. This is I believe the situation with the modern cars! I did consider this option at the time, having taken the hub, kingpins and bushes into a local machine shop for expert fitting. It was then that I found out about not greasing the top nipple. I felt that the existing work would surfice and that the car would function fine with out the additional machining? Time will tell Peter
If you are doing nothing, how do you know when you are finished?

Very interesting, but any one tried using gearbox oil. The front trunions found on the Triumph Herald/Spitfire had to be oiled not greased, grease them and you would loose a wheel!

What I use is "a premium quality mineral oil lithium complex soap thickened grease for anti friction and plain bearings and sliding surfaces" and it's an NLGI No2 grade grease, happens to be red, no idea why but seems to work OK.

Loads of good advice here thanks. I'd go with the remote idea but as Graham said and I found out...again, you still need to check for grease, especially if it gets to the brake discs. Robbie's right, he will find just the right amount of 'squirts' to minimise excess grease but even so I'd want to be underneath to reassure myself that all's well. I have found one solution at another garage no too far away, 30mins. He says if folks get their Mog serviced by him, he lets them use his gear to grease up every 1000 miles, for free. He says he could do it for me if I use him for servicing as it only takes a few mins. Now that's the kind of place I like the sound of! Certainly not using that local garage for anything after that experience. Cheers, Dave (Hook)

Hi, Any updates on the remote greasing options?
Whats the consensus for a 87 car, have borht a top and bottom grease nipple as one shot oiler has been removed.
Any success with the remote grease kits? Thanks, Will
