I am about to fit a performance manifold to my 2002 4/4 (Black Top Zetec). Haynes manual suggests replacing studs and nuts if you remove manifold.

Is this necessary?

If so I also see that some have used bolts (8mm) instead of the studs. Any comments out there?

for the cost of the new studs I would replace. When will you next have the manifold off in another 9 years time by which point the studs will be 18 years old. Bolts will work fine but studs are always best.

When I re-built my 1981 Xflow over the winter I put in all new bolts as I reckoned it may be another 30 years before it is taken apart again!

Would love to cme and help, engine work is so rewarding.

Hi Keith - did you get the Librands manifold? I had thought of fitting this myself but read horror stories of people stripping or breaking manifold studs on ford zetec engines, so had it done for me at John Macdonalds. I'm glad I did, because they struggled. I'm sure that if you do this yourself, it would be worth replacing BUT you may have difficulty getting the old ones out.

The new manifold, sport cat and rear system made a BIG difference to mine!

Do the studs... just take your time getting them out.

What 'Torx' (spelling??) socket do I need to remove the studs. I have some (studs) on order from local Ford agent but want to get the right socket.

Should I try and undo them when warm or cold?
