How great are these people. Normal folk doing everyday jobs who will drop everything, anytime of night and day to go out to sea in sometimes horrendous conditions, risking their lives to save others for no pay. Not just once, repeatedly.
These people are REAL heroes.

Yes their dedication is incredible, we have them in Dartmouth alongside our Reserve on call Firemen and both teams save many lives during the course of the year and for very little acclaim they are a very modest section of heroes and heroines just doing their job is the most you will get out of them clap notworthy

+1. I had a mate in the Brixham lifeboat.
Just like the NY fire chief on 911 said when normal folk run away they run towards the danger.

And here plus the Air Ambulance. Brilliant people who are always there when you need them but hope you never will.

I support the Air Ambulance. We have an acquaintance who spends time as the Doctor on board: he is an A&E Anaesthetist and gives of his time for nothing.
His reasoning is that he enjoys flying and he can do more to help seriously damaged people than he can in the hospital.
The wife of one of the BDAC team owes her life to him: she collapsed with acute cardiac failure: David got her heart going, and on the flight back to Southampton her heart stopped 5 more times. Each time he got her back.
As his wife says, he is a VERY bad looser. If the patient is alive when he arrives he will do everything possible to keep them alive and hand over to the A&E team.

It is not a safe activity: he had 6 months off work a few years ago: kneeling over a colapsed patient in a super market carpark a mindless moron in a SUV accidentally drover his legs, breaking them.
But he went back to work.

I don't know what happened to the SUV driver, I hope the Police threw the book at him.

Why would they throw the book at him if he did it accidentally?

Well it is surely at minimum driving without due care & attention.
