My heater's starting to look a bit secondhand.

Some useful stuff here on rebuilding them; similar to the one in my S2a Land Rover.

I have enjoyed a measure of success by attaching a garden hose to both heaters and Radiators and flushing their cores, by sending the pressurised water through in one direction then reversing the direction and repeating that process until the discolouration of the water flowing out of the cores cleans up... This can be done with the heater/rad left fitted in the car...

I've rebuilt a couple of these Smith's heaters.

My starting point has always been a new core from Holdens (made by Claytons)as I've never come across one which doesn't leak and given the age of them they tend to be pretty crispy by now.

The biggest problem I faced was the pivots for the flaps which sheared off. Removing the remains was a bit tricky and so I used some stainless wire to make new ones.

I delicately bead blasted the casings and then used VHT crackle black paint to finish it.

Way back we cleared out an old BL dealership which had gone bust, and there was a boxfull of those circular matrices...……..I wish I'd kept them......along with a lot of other stuff, which filled a transit box van.

That's almost exactly what I've done. The core's on order from Holden's and I'm going to replace the sheared hinges on the flaps with brass panel pins.

The new element's almost too nice to put on the car.
