Phil you could try giving the rear brake a hard whack with a rubber mallet to see if it will loosen any sticking shoes. At my recent service they found the piston in the cylinder for the trailing shoe had siezed though it still got an MOT with it. Its a frequent failure on Morgan rear brakes even with fluid changes. Parts £79 & 2 hours labour to remove, clean, replace cylinder & refit.

Are there better alternate cylinders available from a different manufacturer?

Not as far as I know but some people get the cylinders lined with stainless steel which resolves the issue permanently, a few people on TM have had this done on trads.

The problem with these cylinders is corrosion. If you peel back the rubber gaitor and smear a little 'Red Rubber' grease around the bore then the cylinder will probably last indefinately.

If the cylinder is too far gone, you can have it reworked with a stainless steel liner but this will cost significantly more than replacing it with a new item. PastParts in Bury St Edmunds can do the re-sleeving.

Planenut: Could you advise on the procedure for bleeding the clutch, I have located the "black nut" but can't see a bleed nipple?

Not all the M3W's are the same as some have a Volvo internal clutch slave cylinder but the parts manual shows an external (Mazda?) type as well. I have the internal one and it's the only type I have seen. On my car the clutch bleed nipple is on a black plastic fitting on the top of the gearbox bellhousing, directly below the oil tank, it has a braided supply hose and a bleed nipple connected to the fitting. Be very careful with the plastic fitting, you don't want to damage it as it is an engine out job to replace it. Just bleed the clutch in the same way as you would bleed the brakes. I use an Ezibleed kit connected to the reservoir and change the clutch and brake fluid at the same time. The clutch fluid gets surprisingly black and dirty looking, even though it gets changed every other year.

The only thing I would add to that is that the bleed nipple (on mine anyway) needs to be undone a surprising amount before it will let the fluid through.
Also, space is limited under the oil tank so I hack sawed off an old 11mm spanner to make it 70mm long. Much easier to turn!
