Last night I had the “I smell fuel, must need to address hose clamps” moment a mile from home. So this morning, after I had confirmed leaking fuel from the connecting hose ends, I replaced the crimped clamps with proper screw-on clamps. All well. While cleaning up and retrieving the pieces of the old clamps from The garage floor, I saw a 3 inch piece of cut hose on the floor as well! Now, perhaps I picked up some road garbage that came home with me. But it is odd that this was found below where I had parked, just below the compensator area. Mystery garbage? Missing hose that hasn’t declared itself? M3W spookiness indeed. Anyone recognize this as something from our beloved, tormenting machines? From what I gather, this type hose is used for fuel and ventilation (PCV) but not for fuel injection.

My conjecture, based on the lengthwise slit, is that it had been used in an anti vibration or anti chafing capacity. Was your machine purchased used?

That’s a great thought, Steve. It was bought new. But perhaps my dealer’s mechanic used it as such while it was in the shop. I will ask him the next time I bring it in. Who knows, someone at Malvern may have done the same thing. I agree it doesn’t look like something functional/original that just fell off. Thanks for the idea.

The Fan housing is only held in place by the two bolts and spacers which go in to the heads at the top. the lower part of the cover just hangs in the air and to keep it from chafing on the cylinder fins they fit it with a piece of rubber hose split down one side. If you check you will probably find the other side with it's rubber still in place. personally I have overcome the problem by leaving the plastic nonsense under the bench in the workshop and fitted the fan in the "radiator " grille in the front of the bonnet where it can pull air through from below the car and cool the oil tank a bit as well.

It's worth pointing out that the Urban cooling fan is only switched on below 10mph.

Above that speed the plastic shroud is designed to direct the airflow to the back of the cylinders to improve cooling.

If that air could be sucked from the oil tank area then it could be a benefit instead of recirculating the hot air off the cylinders.

I went to look at mine and sure enough, there are two split hoses, one on each side o the fan shroud/housing.

Mr. Bleazey! Thank you, this made perfect sense, since I found the piece on the floor after removing and replacing the fan system. I removed it again and did not find another piece so doubtless it came off during a prior removal and reinstallation. much appreciate you sharing this.

Stephen, were your pieces fitted to the lower angle where the bottom shroud goes from horizontal to "northwest" and "northeast"?

I'm feeling left out, I haven't got split hoses on mine.
