I have a 1998 Plus 8. Recently purchased the EZ UP Lever for my top. Maybe I misunderstood their purpose as I thought they held the frame in place ?

If I understand your post correctly I think that you are talking about the over-centre levers which can be used with a traditional 9 stud hood? If so, the purpose of the eccentric levers is to drop the whole hood frame assembly to remove the tension while you attach the hood at the rear and at the front. Once the hood is attached to the press studs at the front and positioned under the brackets at the rear, the levers are rotated to lift the hood frame to place the hood material under tension.
If you are talking about something else, ignore this reply obviously.
If you are talking about the lever which releases the "Easy Up" hood at the rear, its purpose is to release the spring catches at the rear of the hood to allow access to the luggage space and to allow fitting the hood header rail to the windscreen frame.

I think you are referring to the eccentric lever/s .

These are quite excellent ...easy to fit and make putting up studded hoods so v easy.

The levers are probably the best accessory I’ve bought (but maybe the door-stays come top 🤔) - lowering the metal frame releases the tension of the roof material, making undoing the stud fasteners easy, compared to the ‘nail-breaking’ experience before I fitted the levers👌!

These levers are a must - especially for winter use when the hood shrinks with the cold (No comments from Kevfitz please!).
