On a sunny day,I get a strong reflection from the steering wheel boss on the windscreen, and it's distracting. This corrugated 'crushable' spacer is the culprit.



I've been giving this some thought, because I wanted a reversible solution. The solution presented itself in my last shipment of black leather offcuts from e-bay. I'd asked for 'soft & supple' and that's what I got. In the offcuts though was a piece which had been double stitched along one edge and this was just what I needed. First came the usual brown paper template......
Here the actual piece has already been cut out. The small flap at the top of the paper is for an overlap which is fixed with double sided tape.



So the edge nearest the dash has the double stitching. The raw edge which sits under the wheel is folded over onto double sided tape and reinforced with a thin strip of leather.
It wraps round and has stuck perfectly with the tape. Although it maybe doesn't look as good as the alloy, - no more reflections.
Just look at that stitching.....

Dave, at least you have a decent steering column shroud. The later ones are very crude in comparison and have no return face on them, in fact they look as though they have been hacksawed! They might be ok (just) with the standard wheel but with the MotoLita there is a huge gap with an ugly view of the the column switch bases. I'm still messing around with some leather to make a cover to hide it all.

I got a piece of Cloth covered edge trim from Woolies www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-39-edge-trims.aspx and put this around the edge of the shroud. It now looks pretty decent and blocks out the sight of the switch bases -- (£7 per metre)

I got the steering colmn cowl leather- covered ( by Shaun at Allon Whites)
Looks very good and certainly eliminates the 'gap' problem but it wasn't cheap!

I think you'll find Dave has already covered the rough edge of his column shroud with neoprene u-channel...no doubt a description already on this site! Found it:

Personally I like the Motolita spacer as it is, even with the reflections, but will probably cover the edge of the shroud if I can find a suitable bit of edging. At least my interior is black so the shroud "matches" - more of an issue with coloured interiors.

I also tried the 'neoprene' edging solution and in fact Dave was kind enough to give me a link for the suppliers but there ws something about the shape of the cowl edges on my 4/4( 2000 Zetec) which meant that the edging didn't seat very well- hence I went for the leather covering option
