Hello all Can I remove the cats on my 2001 plus 8 and still be road legal? and what will I have to do to ensure the engine still performs ok? It was registered in january 2001. Does anyone know what other cars the steering rack is fitted to? many thanks Will

Hi Will, someone far far more knowledgable than me will answer your how and steering rack questions but my recollection from my Ferrari days was that you 'could' drive without Cats but you will need them replaced for the MOT. I don't think there's a legal ongoing requirement and the MOT is just a snapshot. I await the arrival of the great TM unwashed to address your other queries
Cheers

Having a no catalytic converter does not in itself constitute an MOT failure. As long as the car passes the emissions test it will be OK.

I don't think the rack is fitted to any other cars. It's an odd configuration where the moving part - the rack - emerges from the centre of the housing with extra long track rods.
Conventionally the moving part emerges from each end with short track rods.

The steering rack is unique to Morgan. However, having the moving parts emerging from the centre is not unique. The Citroen 2CV had this arrangement. The rack housing had four functions: Holding the steering rack, acting as a chassis cross frame holding the front suspension arms, holding the adjustable friction dampers of the suspension, and acting as a mounting point for the gearbox.
