I recently got a MOT advisory for loose spokes.
The nearside wheel is fine but on the offside about 1/3 of the spokes were slightly loose. It only needed 1/4 to 1/2 turn of the nipples to take out the slack but does anyone have an idea of what may have caused this?
And do I need to get the wheel refurbished/replaced?

Spokes can loosen over time, the problem is if there are a lot the wheel may be out of true when you retighten them in the incorrect sequence. Not that I know what the correct sequence is. Jack the car up a and with a rudimentary pointer close to the rim spin the wheel to see if it is running out and by how much.

"In the Old days" we checked them all the time on motorcycles.... that and greased the chain and put water in the battery... and checked the oil....
But with the offset of the wheel I am not shocked they can loosen. RogG is right.. check to make sure the wheel is true

Thanks all,
The loose spokes were all from the outside of the wheel and only required a slight tweak to tighten them up.
I will do Roger's check but the wheel seems fine and is in balance so I think it's just something to keep an eye on for now.

Rog G's suggestion does work, but remember to not only check left / right run-out but also that the rim has not pulled slightly oval in it's radius / rotation

Also remember that some wheels have the hub laced in at an offset instead centered in the rim. The one I ran into was offset a quarter inch to align the rotor and caliper .
