Agree with Peter that Omega is my preference over Rolex and have a early speedmaster although my daily use one has become my Zenith Type 20 Chrono with Annual Calendar.. the big numbers are easy for less than perfect eyesight and the timekeeping accuracy is superb.
Never did have a desire for a Rolex, although good movements they always come across as a bit too blingy for my taste. I have a number of vintage Breitlings as well, much nicer than the later ones that again can be a bit OTT.

Not at all keen on Rolex, they are like Porsche's, everyone has one. If you really want a vintage then the place to go is the Burlington Arcade off Piccadilly. There you can buy a watch to match your birthday but every jeweller has at least a couple for sale.
Be a bit daring and go for something a little unusual from an independent company of which there are many. such as Garrick. I had my Morgan watch made by them and, as such, it is the only one in the world!! I have some problems with the ever growing size of wrist watches.
In the past a decent men‘s watch started with a diameter of 32mm, now they go up to 46mm or even more.
IWC is one of the leading big-sizers. Well, maybe the Russian market is in need for such things.
I hope that sooner or later the size will go back to normal dress watch diameters.

I actually have one to sell, bought it for my 65th and wore it fir all of 10 min in the next 2 years. I just too emotionally attached to my Datejust my wife bought me for my 40th.
I bought it fully documented, boxed, and certified from Watchfinder at Bluewater. Anyone interested send me a PM but not in any rush, Watchfinder offered to buy it back so may even go that route for ease but I hate the idea of them banging £3K on it as prices are very strong.

I have another Omega, which is quite rare. My father had used it and he gave it to me for my 40th birthday. A Flightmaster with the colorful hands, two hour hands, and the flat glass. I was so happy about it because as a little boy I liked it so much.
I had let it completely overhaul 18 years ago. A watchmaker in Cologne had bought the old Omega tools. With it he brought the steel into the original brushed look.
For everyday use this watch is a bit unwieldy because it is very heavy and high.
