I have a crossflow with a 5 speed type 9 box fitted.... As the box input shaft is a different diameter, the usual clutch kits from Burton won't fit.... Does anyone do a kit (cover, plate and thrust bearing) for mating this box to the crossflow? or will I have to hunt down part numbers and buy the parts separately? .... Have the engine and box out and split so seems silly not to renew the clutch while the big part of the job is already done.

I had this box fitted to my crossflow 4/4 in the 1990's.

IIRC the clutch kit was for a Ford Sierra. Remember those? Same flywheel fittings as x-flow and splines for 5 speed box.

Of course, Caterham used x-flow with 5 speed box for many years, so they would be able to tell you more.

Cheers Andrew... That rings a bell... I seem to remember hearing the 1.6 Sierra clutch fits the x flow.... Will do some more research in case different years and models were different from each other..... Kit's aren't expensive so makes no sense to skimp on renewing while it's all just sat there only the garage floor in front of me! :-)

It depends which flywheel you have. Some have been already drilled to take the Sierra pressure plate, others will be drilled for a crossflow cover plate. This means you will need a hybrid of a crossflow cover plate, and a 1600 Sierra clutch plate. (7/8 x 20 spline)

My advice would be to split the engine and box to see what type you actually need before ordering!

Arwyn..... Do I take it I would be looking for evidence of 'extra holes' where the x flow clutch mounting holes were (maybe plugged)? ..... I admit I'm remembering back to an old conversation but I took it that the 1.6 Sierra kit (rather than the 2l) was a direct bolt on to the x flow flywheel but with the type 9 spline friction plate ... The engine is sat on the workshop floor with the clutch waving in the breeze as the box is off.... Will do some measuring and looking before I commit actual cash money!!.... Thanks for the reply

It's to do with the size of the clutch cover. Mike Pullen covered it in in his excellent 5 speed conversion article in Miscellany quite a few years ago. I'll dig out a copy when I get home tonight.

Many thanks Arwyn.... Much appreciated.... Not new to fettling vehicles, just new to Morgans..... I know from having modified stuff myself in the past that nothing should be taken for granted if there's bits put together that weren't like that when it was built.

Ok, if you can get yourself a copy of Five Onto Kent Will Go which was a well written article in Miscellany circa October/November/December 1986 by Mike Pullen.

Not sure if the MSCC archives can supply a copy but worth an ask.

Basically there are two types of clutch plate, 190mm and 215mm.

If your flywheel has the 190mm plate the pressure plate fixing holes will be on a 225.25mm PCD

If your flywheel has the 215mm plate, the pressure plate fixing holes are on a 246mm PCD

I think that if you have the 215mm plate, then a 1.8/2 litre clutch kit will fit

If you have 190mm plate then you need a Crossflow clutch cover, Type 9 release bearing and a 1.6 Sierra plate. Check it has 1" x 23 spine centre, I made a mistake in my earlier post.

Bear in mind these may have been superceded:

190mm:

Pressure plate: 83 BB 7563 AA or BA
Clutch plate: 83 BB 7550 DA or EA

215mm

Pressure plate: 83 BB 7563 DA
Clutch plate: 83 BB 7550 FS

Many thanks for the info Arwyn (and taking the time to look it out for me)... I'll be out in the workshop tomorrow doing some measuring :-). Definitely best to be doing indoor jobs like that .... Ice on the horse's water trough over half an inch thick this morning.. And it's cleared every evening!
