My monkey wrench is not as large as this crescent wrench that I had to purchase to work on my Caterpillar Bulldozer 35 years ago. Makes a great rear axle wrench.

btw.... it is a combination wrench.... a spanner on one end and a closed toothed wrench on the other
and don't get me started about crescent....
I'm not having a go here, I'm genuinely interested. In English English, the term Spanner is used for a tool which is used on fasteners (ie nuts and bolts), whereas the term Wrench is used for a tool which is used on pipe fittings and the like. Is there no distinction made between these two tool types in American English? In American English a "wrench" is any type of spanner with usually a descriptor. So a "pipe Wrench" would be for pipes (although it is often called a "monkey wrench"), open-end wrench, combination etc. Unfortunately most people call an "adjustable open ended wrench" a "Crescent wrench" as they originally were made by the Crescent tool company. The term "spanner" is just not used in American English. BTW.... the long screw driver in my picture is called a "Yankee screwdriver".

Yep, that's what we call them too. I've got a couple kicking around somewhere. Can't say I've ever actually used them though.

I recall using them as a child in the late 50's early 60's. I have two of them. They were made by the "Yankee tool company". But we used to say they were called Yankee as they were thrifty.

Ahem. only since 1915 or so. The screw-adjustable spanner was invented by Edwin Beard Budding (who also invented the lawnmower) just down the road from me in Thrupp, back in 1842. There's an example of his adjustable spanner on display in Stroud Museum.

I remember many years ago when I was in the RAF being asked by a visiting USAF tech if I had a "screw chaser", I said that I didn't think I did but then he pointed to the screwdriver in our toolkit. We had a lot of terminology issues that I didn't think we would as we were operating F4 Phantoms at the time, although they had been compromised to fit RR engines. You may notice that my avatar isn't a Phantom.

Did you have the requisite "600mph tape" in your tool kit? It was the US Marine designation for duct tape for the bomb fuses.

Plenty of speed tape. I would still be lost without it.
