I've decided to sell the Stag and concentrate on the Morgan. However that leaves a car sized hole in the garage that needs filling.
My thoughts had turned to an oldish MX5 for around £4000. Plenty about, pretty reliable, fun open top motoring and inexpensive.
However when I started looking at car tax they're up towards £300 per year which for something that's going to be used infrequently seems expensive (especially as the Stag costs nothing to tax and £85 a year to insure)
So here's a challenge - recommend me fun, open top, sporty car that costs less than £150 a year to tax and under £4000 to buy.

Forget another car. You've already got a fun, open top and VERY Sporty car.
Turn it into a workshop.
You could get a half decent Lathe and Milling Machine for £4000 and have lots of fun making things for the Morgan.
Ask Bonesie for some advice.

Nah, that's not an option. I already have a workshop capable of making anything I need. Lathe, Semi Pro MIG, Large compressor. I did have a 3D printer and Laser cutter but didn't use them enough to warrant the space they took up so they got sold.
I enjoy working on cars but my good lady isn't a fan of anything uncomfortable.
She's been in the Morgan once, probably never again.
Until last year we had 7 cars between us and downsized to 4 so if that Stag goes it will have to be replaced by something she will sometimes come out in and something I can play with a bit.

I'll know where to go next time I need something making.

As a Stag owner you will be well versed in Triumphs so what about a Spitfire or a Spridget. Yes, I know they can both be well over your budget but there are some cheap ones out there. For something different how about a Reliant Scimitar or a Sabra?
Here for a good time not a long time!! Reg

Had two spitfires and three Midgets - midget is a possibility but for the money I want to spend its slim pickings.
Also had a Scimitar, very interesting car - a bit big for my liking but doable. Always smells of plastic for some reason.

Think Tractor, but cheap and un restored, .....restore and sell, it can be an on going hobby with all the workshop kit you have at hand. The wife will love been pulled around on the Trailer especially if there is Children involved.

You could have great fun in a Morris Minor and you're good lady would most likely fall in love with it . Convertible ,saloon or Traveller . No tax optional MOT and lots of choice . And believe it not great fun to drive.
