So here's a challenge - recommend me fun, open top, sporty car that costs less than £150 a year to tax and under £4000 to buy.
Gary
You cannot get anything apart from a MX5 that is fun/classic for £4k

An MGB would be my choice. However good the MX5 is, it still gives the impression of a hairdressers car.

Yes, and the Fiat is FWD which I would not prefer. The MX5 is about to become a serious youngtimer.

I see the term " hairdressers car" used often in the same sentence when talking about MX5s. Dare I suggest by those who haven't tried one? They are of course a wonderful thing to pilot - not fast but so rewarding. The 2005 on Mk3 isn't as sharp as the MK1 or 2 so for purity a really nice early one would be a safe bet. The mk2 (without pop-up headlamps) is likely the best value. BUT-
However its very much a case of buyer beware. Whilst these cars are super reliable they also rust very badly - I'm talking corrosion that effectively makes them uneconomic to fix. Find a nice one that has seen love/attention/rust proofing and its fine - otherwise be prepared to chuck it away at the next MOT.

Try keeping up with a well driven MX5 through the twisty bits. They might not be a Porche but they can certainly keep a Plus 4 at bay.
