As for landies, anyone seen the price of even half decent series 1, 2 or 3s?

You occasionally see one for sale on the LRS2C forum here. You will need to sign up though but worth it as you will probably get a response in the wanted section. £5-6000 should get you an S2a that has generally good mechanics and originality, but probably in need of some bodywork tidying or a little welding, but you may need to wait for the right one. Members generally offer only genuine ones with honest detailed description of condition. More of a risk on eBay but you can usually view before bidding as I did. S3 models a little cheaper but catching up S2 prices. Unfortunately you've missed the boat in getting an S1 at anything less than silly price in driveable condition.

Availability of new chassis and now bulkheads plus most other parts, facilitates rebuilds of even those that have been in a hedge for 10 years.

It's totally crazy how the prices are going up. I bought a brand new S2000 for 31.000€ in autumn 2002. That was probably the best deal in Germany at that time. The dealer wanted to get rid of the car because he had a fight with Honda. He only wanted to sell Peugeots afterwards. I loved the car very much. But after three years I was a bit annoyed by the need to always rev up to 9000 rpm. Nothing happened below 5.500 rpm. Today I'm sad that I didn't keep the S2000. But this is a typical story as it happens again and again. You think you can buy a car like this over and over again. But you realize too late that this time is over.
There is one advantage. I've been driving Morgan since I sold the S2000 in 2005.
To sum it up, the S2000 is a great car. But you always have to be very attentive. It's 80% LSD. I once spun 180 degrees in the rain in the city while accelerating, luckily without any damage or accident. The S2000 was a little too heavy. With 1000 kg it would have been ideal.

This one looks good with five days to go on eBay.

As is often the case something of a bitza in the originality stakes although this appears to have more pre April 1967 parts than not. Can't read chassis suffix letter which would give better dating.

Plus points:
Current voluntary MOT (although exempt)
earlier headlamps in apron
earlier Smiths heater
earlier ignition switch
earlier handbrake and gear lever
brake servo added
free wheeling front hubs
Safari rear door
bonnet mounted spare
241 chassis prefix suggests earlier petrol S2a

Originality negatives:
S3 door hinges
S3 heater inlet in wing
Instrument panel a mixture of old and new S2a
Later single motor wipers and screen vents
OE apron bonnet catch missing
Needs some remedial work on A pillars

May be ex military given front sidelight/indicator location. This may also explain the later 1972 DVLA registration on return to civilian use.

Merry Xmas 🍻🍾🍷

Yes it always saddens me to see one that appears to be better than mine was and at a lower price frown Am watching to see what this one makes though.

Have a great one Graham wine

Years ago I did a revamp on a very tired but basically sound S2a. Bought it for £800 spent about £300 on it and just managed to get £1500 for it. Probably worth £8000 plus now.

Silly

Have a great one, one and all

Ps ideas are interesting and evolving a little. Boxster?...

Most of the suggestions here wont fit in with your £400 budget for tax and insurance, but the Smart Roadster will. My wife's costs £110 to tax and her insurance is well below £200 Car is totally reliable and will outhandle almost all the cars mentioned here

How about a DATSUN FAIRLADY 2000 ROADSTER (1969)

This one is sold but there must be others about.
